Six Players Signed To Bulldog Baseball For 2004-05 Campaign
Truman baseball coach Lawrence Scully announced today that the 2004-05 squad
will welcome six new Bulldogs. Three of the players are transfer students
and three will join the Bulldogs out of high school.
A.J. Barton (Omaha, Neb./Millard North High School) is a right-handed pitcher. Last season, he led his high school team to a second-place finish at the state championship while compiling a 4-1 record with two saves. In American Legion baseball, he was second-team all-district last year at third base and on the mound, he was 3-1 with three saves. This season, he is 5-2 in Legion ball with three saves. He is also five-of-11 at the plate.
"A.J. has the potential to be a strong pitcher for us right away," said Scully.
Randy Beilsmith (St. Louis, Mo./St. Charles Community College) is a right-handed pitcher. He was a St. Louis Metro Collegians all-star in 2003 and also earned St. Charles American Legion all-star honors back in 2001. At St. Charles West High School, he was a first-team all-conference in 2002 and a second-team selection in 2001.
"Randy is a good breaking ball pitcher who will bring balance to our staff," said Scully.
Alex Dack (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North High School) is a rightfielder and right-handed pitcher. Last year, he earned honorable mention all-Sun Country and honorable mention East Kansas League accolades. He helped his team be ranked 10th in the state of Kansas and he earned the East Kansas League Scholar Athlete awards.
"Alex has gap power and surprising arm strength for a two-way player," said Scully.
Brian Huck (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette High School) will play centerfield for Truman. In his final high school season, he batted .328 with five doubles and 16 stolen bases. He is a former football player, who earned all-conference and was a team captain last year.
"Moving from the infield to the outfield will not be a problem for Brian," said Scully. "He is an athletic player with strength and speed."
Zach Wooley (Alton, Ill./SIU-Edwardsville) will fill the catcher position for the Bulldogs. He played in 12 games behind the plate for the Cougars last year. He had a .389 slugging percentage with four of his eight hits going for extra bases. At Civic Memorial High School, he earned first-team all-conference honors. Wooley is also a former football star, earning first-team all-conference honors in high school and being named a preseason all-American last year for SIU-Edwardsville.
"Zach will be a RBI hitter for us and an impact type guy behind the plate," said Scully.
Sean Zaborowski (Winona, Minn./Des Moines Area Community College) is a first-baseman. Last year, he earned second-team all-region honors at Des Moines Area Community College. In high school, he was all-conference, all-section and all-state during his senior season at Winona South High School.
"Sean is a contact hitter who brings depth and added defense to the corner position," said Scully.
The Truman baseball team finished the 2004 season with a 10-36 overall record. The Bulldogs went 10-20 in MIAA games, falling one win shy of tying the school record for most conference wins in a season.
