Three Bulldogs Earn Player of the Week Honors
Three Truman State athletes earned Player of the Week Honors from the MIAA today. Dusty Burk was the Wilson/MIAA football offensive player of the week, Monica Marlower was the Wilson/MIAA volleyball setter of the year and Lisa Schmalz was the MIAA women's soccer player of the week.
Burk won the honor for the second time this season after recording 378 yards of total offense and having a hand in all four of the Bulldogs' touchdowns last Saturday in a 28-14 win over Missouri Southern. He finished the game with 148 yards rushing on 23 carries with three scores and was 19-of-32 passing for 230 yards and another touchdown.
Marlowe also won the award earlier in the year and won it this week after averaging 11.33 assists a game and recording assist number 5000 for her career. That milestone came on her final assist in the victory over Emporia State, a match in which she had 47 assists, 13 digs, four block assists and three kills. She also had 55 assists in a 3-2 loss to Washburn and recorded 19 digs, one aces, one block and four kills in that match.
Schmalz is the third Bulldog women's soccer player to receive player of the week honors this year. Schmalz allowed just one goal in 278 minutes in three Truman wins last week. Against Northwest Missouri, she allowed her only goal and made three saves in a 4-1 win. Facing Southwest Baptist, she made six saves in a 1-0 Bulldog victory. Against Missouri-Rolla, she had to work overtime as the Bulldogs won in the 99th minute. She only faced two shots in that game, neither of which was on goal.
