Truman Names Shannon Currier Its New Head Football Coach
Truman State University
Director of Athletics Jerry Wollmering announced today that Shannon Currier
has been selected as the new Bulldog head football coach. Currier becomes
the 19th head coach in the history of the Truman program.
"I am excited about being named the new head coach at Truman," said Currier. "I look forward to working with the quality people at the institution from the president, athletics director and everyone that I have met at the University. I hope to create a lot of enthusiasm in the community and campus about the program and work hard to make the team even better."
"We are excited to have Shannon leading our football program," said Wollmering. "He brings a wealth of head coaching experience, energy, and enthusiasm to the Truman football program. We look forward to Shannon and his family joining the Kirksville and Truman community."
"I am very pleased with Shannon Currier's appointment as head football coach," said Truman State University President Barbara Dixon. "He understands Truman's unique mission and I am confident he will guide our team in their pursuit of excellence and success both on the football field and in the academic arena."
Currier has served as head football coach and offensive coordinator at NCAA Division II Concordia University in St. Paul, Minn., since December 2000. In four years as head coach at Concordia, he has a rebuilt the program despite working with a limited number of scholarships. Currier inherited a team that won just two games in 1999, and since that time he has compiled a record of 32-12. The Golden Bears have been nationally ranked every year from 2000 to 2003 and last season, won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and was a participant in the Mineral Water Bowl. Currier was named the 2003 conference coach of the year and earned honorable mention honors for the Midwest region coach of the year.
While at Concordia, the Golden Bears have had one of the top offenses in NCAA Division II. His teams ranked seventh in total offense in the country in 2002 and sixth this past season. Concordia has averaged nearly 35 points a game the last three years, including 37 points in 2003.
Currier's players also had success in the classrooms. He has coached 33 academic all-conference players in his four seasons.
Prior to being named head coach at Concordia, Currier served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at the school for two seasons. He also served as the offensive coordinator at Southwest State University (Minn.) (1997-99), University of Minnesota-Crookston (1995-97) and offensive backfield/wide receiver coach at Bemidji State University (Minn.) (1994-1995).
Currier is a former college quarterback at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. He earned a B.A. in physical education from Hamline and he has a M.S. in health, physical education and recreation from Bemidji State.
He and his wife Amy have two children, Frannie and Collin.
Currier will be taking over a Truman football program that has a rich history of success. The Bulldogs play in one of the top NCAA Division II conferences and they have had a winning record in 11 out of the last 14 seasons. The Truman athletics department is one of the best in the country, finishing in the top 10 in the NACDA Director's Cup in each of the last five years. Bulldog student-athletes excel in all areas as they have the highest graduation in the MIAA while attending one of the top universities in the Midwest.
