2001 Truman Football Recruits

Head football coach John Ware has announced that he has received 19 national letters of intent from recruits. Twelve of those individuals are Missouri recruits, while five are from Illinois and and one each from Arizona and Texas.

The Truman Bulldogs were 6-5 overall last year and 5-4 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, finishing in a tie for fourth-place. Coach Ware completed his sixth season as head coach of the Bulldogs and is 36-29 during that time and is 35-19 in the MIAA. Truman made three postseason trips in the '90s and had the 1996 NCAA Division II player of the year, Harlon Hill winner Jarrett Anderson, in 1996.

Missouri Recruits

Justin Bodenhausen
Cosby, Mo. (Savannah H.S.)
Wide Receiver, 5-9, 160

Justin Bodenhausen was first-team 3A all-state and first-team all-MEC conference at defensive back in 2000. He was also named to the Northwest all-district team as a senior and was a second-team all-conference DB as a junior.

Last season, Bodenhausen was an option quarterback, running for 1,228 yards on 123 carries, and scored 19 touchdowns. He also scored a TD on defense and on a kickoff return, as well as made one two-point conversion, scoring a total of 128 points as a senior.

Bodenhausen was an honorable mention all-conference wide receiver and the team's special teams MVP as a junior.

He was also named Savannah's 2000 offensive MVP.

Keith Brigman
Carl Junction, Mo. (Carl Junction H.S)
Defensive Lineman, 6-2, 215 pounds

Keith Brigman was an all-district defensive end, and earned first-team all-conference honors as a tight end and defensive lineman.

He was given the team's captain award, as well as the Bulldog award for leadership qualities on and off the field.

Brigman was also an all-conference performer in track.

Rusty Drewing (Droo-ing)
Columbia, Mo. (Hickman H.S)
Offensive/Defensive Lineman
5-11, 250 pounds

This past season, Drewing was a 5A all-district and a second-team all-state offensive lineman. He was also named all-area by the Columbia Tribune.

As a junior, Drewing was an all-district defensive lineman.

Brandon Gutshall
Platte City, Mo. (Platte County H.S.)
Quarterback, 6-2, 200 pounds

A standout in the state as a quarterback this past season, Gutshall earned first-team 3A all-state, all-metro, all-district and all-conference accolades.

He won the Frank Fontana player of the year award in Kansas City for class 4A and under.

Gutshall guided his team to a 37-2 record as a three-year starter. He also earned first-team all-conference and all-district honors, as well as second-team all-state recognition as a QB his junior year.

He set school records for career touchdowns (53) and passing yardage (4,442), and currently maintains a 4.0 grade point average.

Gutshall was also a Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association scholar-athlete finalist.

Lennie Harrison
Webster Groves, Mo. (Webster Groves H.S.)
Offensive Center, 6-2, 260 pounds

Lennie Harrison was a first-team all-Suburban South Conference selection, and a first-team all-metro choice as a center by the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

During his junior season, he was second-team all-league as a center.

Mark Kamphoefner
Defiance, Mo. (Washington H.S.)
Kicker/Linebacker, 6-0, 180 pounds

Mark Kamphoefner was a first-team all-state kicker for class 4A as a senior. He was a unanimous choice by the Four Rivers conference for first-team honors as a kicker and punter, and was also a first-team all-league running back.

Kamphoefner was also a unanimous choice for first-team all-area accolades as a place kicker, but was also named first-team all-area as a punter and linebacker. He was a third-team all-area running back.

This past year, Kamphoefner was named Washington High School's defensive player of the year, special teams player of the year and linebacker of the year.

He was also a first-team all-conference place kicker as a sophomore and junior. His last season, Kamphoefner kicked a 50-yard field goal and had a punt for 73 yards.

Justin Selle (Sell-ee)
Hannibal, Mo. (Hannibal Senior H.S.)
Offensive/Defensive Lineman 6-4, 250 pounds

As a senior defensive lineman, Justin Selle had an outstanding senior season that culminated with first-team all-area honors from the Quincy Herald Whig. He was also a second-team 4A all-state pick, and earned first-team all-North Central Missouri Conference and all-district honors. As an offensive lineman, Selle was second-team all-league and all-district this past year.

The Hannibal football team named Selle its impact player of the year and defensive lineman of the year.

Jason Smoot
Bethel, Mo. (North Shelby H.S.)
Linebacker, 6-1, 215 pounds

Jason Smoot was named to the KRES 104.7 FM all-star team for the 2000 football season, and was a second-team 1A all-state linebacker. He was also a unanimous first-team all-Tri-Rivers conference linebacker, as well as a first-team all-conference offensive lineman.

The last two years, Smoot has been named a first-team all-district offensive and defensive lineman.

As a junior, Smoot also earned first-team all-league honors at linebacker and second-team accolades as an offensive lineman.

Aaron Smoot
Shelbina, Mo. (South Shelby H.S.)
Offensive/Defensive Lineman 6-2, 240 pounds

Aaron Smoot was a first-team all-state offensive lineman for class 2A this past season. He was also named a first-team defensive end by the Quincy Herald Whig and KHQA television.

In addition, Smoot garnered first-team all-district and unanimous first-team all-Clarence Cannon Conference honors on both the offensive and defensive lines.

He was given the captain's award and named the offensive and defensive lineman of the year by South Shelby.

Quarterback, 6-1, 175 pounds

Mike Spiegel was a team captain last season, guiding his team to a 5-5 finish.

Offensive/Defensive Lineman, 6-3, 300

Two-time All-Academic Gateway Athletic Conference pick. Second-team all-conference tackle. Will play in "East Meets West" Game in Jefferson City later this summer.

Wide Receiver, 6-1, 170 pounds

Walter Washington was sixth in the state in the open 400-meters.

Arizona Recruit

Mark Standage
Scottsdale, Ariz. (Desert Mountain H.S.)
Defensive Lineman, 6-3, 258 pounds

Mark Standage was a second-team all-state offensive lineman, as well as first-team all-region as an offensive and defensive lineman. As a junior offensive lineman, he earned second-team all-region and first-team all-Scottsdale recognition, and was named the most valuable offensive lineman by his team. Standage also won the team's leadership award.

Dustin Barnes
Gurnee, Ill. (Carmel H.S.)
Offensive Lineman, 6-4, 270 pounds

Dustin Barnes received the Carmel High School Bitto award for outstanding performance on and off the field. He was also named senior of the month and earned High Honors academically.

Zac Rotello
Rockford, Ill. (Rockford Boylan H.S.)
Linebacker, 6'0, 200 pounds

Zac Rotello's team was the state semi-finalist this past season. He was named a first-team all-Northern Illinois Conference linebacker after leading the team with 118 total tackles as a senior. Rotello was also a Northern Illinois Conference Scholar-Athlete award recipient.

Glen Sinish
Posen, Ill. (Bremen Senior H.S.)
Offensive Lineman, 6-4, 290 pounds

Glen Sinish garnered first-team all-state recognition on the offensive line from the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association in 2000. In addition, he was a first-team all-SICA Green conference choice on the offensive line for the last two years. Sinish was also named first-team all-area by the Star Newspapers and the Daily Southtown.

Offensive/Defensive Lineman 6-4, 260 pounds

Mike Szpira was second-team all-conference on both the offensive and defensive lines. He was also named to the Gatorade "Will To Win" team.

James Walton
Hinsdale, Ill. (Hinsdale South H.S.)
Wide Receiver, 6-3, 185 Pounds

Selected as one of the Chicago area's top 100 seniors, James Walton was an honorable mention all-area and all-Suburban Life Newspaper pick.

As a junior, he was selected for first-team all-conference honors, and was a first-team all-area pick by the Suburban Life Newspapers and the Daily Herald.

Walton is the school record holder for most receptions (49) and most yards in a season (840), most receptions in a game (10) and most career receptions.

Offensive Lineman, 6-3, 320 pounds

Roland Reeves earned second-team all-district accolades as an offensive lineman during his senior season.
