TRUMAN: Truman is sitting in a three-way tie for second in the MIAA with a 3-1 mark and is 4-2 on the season. Saturday's opponent, Missouri Western, along with Emporia State are the other two teams sporting 3-1 records in the conference.

While Truman will travel to Missouri Western for its homecoming, Emporia will entertain Pittsburg State which is currently 2-2 in league action. Missouri Western was one of the two teams to hand PSU a loss in the MIAA, along with defending national champion Northwest Missouri.

TRUMAN VS. CENTRAL MISSOURI-Oct. 7, 2000: The Bulldogs are relishing a 28-14 victory over Central Missouri last weekend in front of a Family Day crowd. The 'Dogs' used 93 offensive plays in beating the Mules, the most by a Truman team since a 36-18 loss to CMSU in 1993 when the same number were also used.

The Mules scored first after blocking a punt on the 'Dogs first drive and returned it nine yards for the score. But Truman would even the score before the conclusion of the first quarter when junior quarterback Eric Howe (West Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling) connected with junior wide receiver Geoff Jensen (Grinnell, Iowa) on a 9-yard pass play at 6:06. Senior fullback Steve Wilson (Mexico, Mo.) took over the team-lead in scoring for the season after punching in two TDs vs. Central Missouri, the first at 13:17 in the second period.

MIAA defensive player of the week Jake Willrich (Grimes, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes) then intercepted the Mule quarterback, the first of five turnovers caused by the Bulldog defense.

Wilson made his second 1-yard TD run with 23 seconds left in the half to give the 'Dogs a 21-7 lead at intermission.

Truman missed a 33-yard field goal at 5:32 in the third quarter, but forced another CMSU turnover on the very next series after senior defensive tackle Curt Cira (St. Louis/Vianney) sacked the CMSU signal-caller, causing a fumble which freshman linebacker Tameem Yehyawi (Keokuk, Iowa) recovered for Truman.

Senior defensive back Toko Nguyen (Quincy, Ill./Notre Dame) picked off his first pass on the first play of CMSU's next drive. Yehyawi also forced a fumble to cause the Mules' fourth turnover with about eight and a half minutes left to play. Central Missouri also lost a fumble on its next possession, this time caused by Willrich and recovered by freshman linebacker Derek Kent (Lucas, Iowa/ Chariton).

But the 'Dogs would also lose a fumble on their own 11-yard line on the next drive. It then took just one play, a 7-yard pass, to bring the Mules within seven points of Truman. The Bulldogs' Mike Redding (Lake Zurich, Ill.) broke loose for a 57-yard run with 59 seconds remaining in the game, the longest of his career, to give Truman its 28-14 margin of victory. CMSU failed to convert on fourth-and-six from the Truman 42 in its last possession.

WILLRICH IS MIAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jake Willrich earned MIAA player of the week honors after leading the team with eight total tackles, including six solo stops. He also stopped a Mule drive on the Truman 8-yard line by forcing a fumble. His six solos were a career high, and he charted another career-first with an interception in the second half. Willrich also sacked the CMSU quarterback for a loss of six yards.

TRUMAN IN THE NATIONAL POLLS: The American Football Coaches Association official NCAA Divison II poll mentioned Truman as receiving two votes for the top 25 this week. However, the USA Football poll has the Bulldogs listed at No. 30 this week. Northwest Missouri tops the AFCA poll while Pittsburg State is 17th.
