Men's Basketball Opens Up MIAA Home Season With An Upset Win Over No. 21 Northwest Missouri
The Truman men's basketball team broke through with its biggest win in the last few seasons, knocking off nationally-ranked Northwest Missouri by a 83-71 score in the MIAA home opener for the squad.
The Bulldogs never trailed in the game, jumping out of the gates on a 14-4 run. The team led by as much as 13 in the first-half but Northwest Missouri answered with a 10-0 run at the end of the half to trail just 36-33 at the break.
Truman got off to another strong start in the second-half, opening up an eleven-point advantage at 48-37 with just under 16 minutes to go. Northwest Missouri would never get closer than three as clutch Bulldog shooting helped put down several Bearcat rallies.
Truman shot 55.9% from the field on the night and turned the ball over just eight times. Jiri Mikl ended with 20 points, 13 in the second-half, and hit four-of-10 from three-point range. It was a balanced offensive effort for the Bulldogs asAdam Glosier added 18 points, Matt Beran had 16, Chip Sodemann had 12 and Aaron Mueller chipped in with nine. Derek Lindsey led the effort on the boards with eight and Sodemann had a season-high seven assists.
Northwest Missouri, the top three-point shooting team in the MIAA, was held to just six three-pointers and a .286 percentage beyond the arc. Scott Fleming ended the game with 17 points and Kelvin Parker had 15. Austin Meyer was in double-figures with 11. Jesse Shaw was the leading rebounder with seven and also had nine points.
Both teams are now 1-2 in MIAA play. The Bulldogs return to the court
next Saturday at Emporia State.
