Bulldog Men's Basketball Travels to Lincoln; Returns Home to Face Culver-Stockton

Truman (1-4): The Bulldogs are coming off of their first win of the year, an 80-75 decision on Dec. 1 over Drury.

Truman has fielded an offensive attack that has seen three players lead the team in the first five games. Senior forward Scott Coykendall (Elmwood, Ill./Farmington HS, Spoon River CC) leads the team in scoring, with an average of 13.4 points per game. Coykendall has three double-figure scoring games on the year, including a team season-high 28-point effort in the opener.

Freshman guard Mark Huppe (Overland Park, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) is second on the team with an average of 10.6 points per game. He's shooting 36.4 percent from three-point range and put up a career-high 19 points vs. Missouri-St. Louis.

Junior forward Jiri Mikl (Ostrava, Czech Republic/Cs. Exil 491, Ostrava) has led the team in the last two games, including a career-high-tying 22-point outing in the victory over Drury. He's hit on 10 of his last 19 three-point attempts since moving out of the starting lineup. All told, he's shooting a team-best 41.9 percent from three-point territory.

Sophomore center Adam Glosier (St. Charles, Mo./West HS, Army) is averaging 6.8 rebounds, ranking just behind Coykendall's 7.2. Glosier had his first double-double as a Bulldog when he notched 11 points and 13 rebounds to help the 'Dogs over Drury.

TRUMAN VS. DRURY (DEC. 1): Mikl scored 16 first-half points and led the Bulldogs to an 80-75 home victory on Saturday (Dec. 1) over Drury. Mikl, who finished with a game-high 22 points, hit on six of his first eight field goals, including four of six from three-point range.

Thanks to Mikl's hot shooting, the 'Dogs raced to a 47-36 halftime lead and held the advantage throughout the entire first half, including a lead that grew as large as 16 points.

Drury started the second half with a 15-4 run that eventually knotted the score at 51. But with four minutes to play, Truman started a 9-0 spurt that put the team up by 10 with 58 seconds to play.

Glosier and Coykendall each added 11 points for Truman, in addition to Mikl's 22. Glosier talled his first double-double as a Bulldog, hauling in a game-high 13 rebounds to go with three blocked shots. Sophomore Matt Beran (Victor, Iowa/HLV-Victor) charted six points, six rebounds and five assists.

LINCOLN (3-4): The Blue Tigers have lost three in a row but none by more than eight points. Lincoln's latest outing, a Wednesday meeting at Missouri-Rolla, saw the team fall by a 99-95 count. LU's victories have come against Morningside (Iowa) (87-61), Central Missouri State (78-72) and Missouri Western (126-112). The team also has a loss to MWSC (109-101) in addition to defeats against Northwest Missouri State (72-61), Columbia College (77-72) and UMR.

Lincoln, which averages 88.6 points a game but gives up 86 points an outing, has five players averaging double figures, led by senior guard Kenny Dye (17.7 ppg). Three others ­­ seniors Teran Tease and Mario Davis and junior Cordell Maxwell ­­ come in averaging 12.4 points. Forward Jason Friday, fifth on the team with 12.1 points per game, is shooting 72.1 percent from the field and put up 30 points in the loss to MWSC. Davis is LU's most accurate three-point threat, having hit on 45.2 percent of his attempts from long range.

In rebounding, junior Tedrell Jones averages a team-high 6.0 boards per game. Jones also leads the Blue Tigers with 17 steals.

In Wednesday's game at UMR, Dye led the way with 25 points, while Tease had 18. Jones and Friday each added 15 points as the Miners rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit.

The Blue Tigers finished 20-7 last season and tied for the conference championship in the Heartland.

SERIES RECORD WITH LINCOLN: Truman leads 37-32 ... The Blue Tigers, formerly of the MIAA, snapped a Truman six-game winning streak in the series with a 78-69 win at Pershing Arena in the regular season opener last year.

CULVER-STOCKTON (9-0): The Wildcats are ranked No. 18 in the latest NAIA Div. II poll and have started with a 9-0 record this season. The team has a pair of victories over Harris-Stowe (80-76 and 95-86) and Iowa Wesleyan (85-73 and 87-78). CSC also has wins over Hannibal-LaGrange (76-52), Mt. St. Clare (67-57), Cornell (63-56), Benedictine (84-75) and Graceland (74-65).

Senior guard Dan Buelt leads the Wildcats with a scoring average of 16 points per game and has been an accurate shooter so far this season. He's connected on 51.4 percent of his shots overall and 88.2 percent of his foul shots. He's also 10-of-20 from three-point range. Buelt scored a team-season-high 25 points in the first win over Iowa Wesleyan. He also has 47 assists.

Senior center Brian Toedebusch is second on the team with 15.9 points but leads the squad in rebounding (9.1 rpg). A 58.5 percent field goal shooter, Toedebusch has 11 blocks this season. One of his top games this year was a 21-point, 14-rebound performance in the second meeting with Harris-Stowe.

Sophomore guard Josh Flynn averages 9.4 points to go with a team-high 19 steals. He put up 25 points in the second meeting with Iowa Wesleyan.

SERIES RECORD WITH CULVER-STOCKTON: Truman leads 22-8 ... The 'Dogs have won seven straight over CSC, including a 76-62 win in the 1999-2000 season.

TRUMAN VS. LINCOLN (NOV. 21, 2000): Brian Brown matched his career-high by scoring 28 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field in last year's home-opening 78-69 loss to Lincoln University. Brown also tallied seven rebounds.

Guard Mike Peterson also reached double figures with 11 points. Freshman forward Beran led the team with five assists.

The Bulldogs led by six, 30-24, with 3:47 to play in the first half, but the Blue Tigers ended the period on a 17-1 run. Truman closed to within three points with 3:10 remaining in the game and trailed 73-69 with 1:03 left, but could draw no closer.

Kenny Dye and Troy Moore had 19 apiece to pace Lincoln, while Mario Davis and Teran Tease added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Coaches records: Jack Schrader is in his seventh season at the helm of the Bulldogs and has a record of 81-91 (.471).

Bill Pope is in his fifth season with Lincoln and has a career record of 35-77 (.313).

BULLDOGS IN MIAA STATISTCS (THROUGH GAMES OF DEC. 2): Coykendall currently ranks 15th in the MIAA in scoring and ninth in rebounding and field goal percentage (.527).

Glosier is 13th in the league in rebounding and fourth with 1.2 blocks per game.

Mikl ranks tied for fourth in three-pointers made (2.60 pg) and seventh in three-point field goal percentage (.419).

Huppe is 10th in the conference in three-point field goal percentage and is sixth in threes made (2.40 pg).

As a team, the Bulldogs rank second in the MIAA in three-pointers made per game (9.00).

INJURY REPORT: Senior guard Nathan Owen (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Central, Southeast Missouri State) is sidelined with a broken hand.

UP NEXT: After the 'Dogs face Lincoln on Saturday, they'll return home for a Monday (Dec. 10) meeting with Culver-Stockton, the team's final home game until January 5. Truman is slated to wrap up the calendar year on the road at SIU-Edwardsville on Dec. 20.
