TRUMAN: The Bulldogs start a new season on Friday after posting a 16-11 record last season, including a 9-9 mark in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. But the 'Dogs will be donning a new look in 2000-01, having graduated five seniors who played in nearly 500 career games under head coach Jack Schrader.

Truman has two returning starters in senior captains Mike Peterson (Mason City, Iowa) and Brian Brown (Centralia, Mo.). Brown, an honorable mention all-conference selection two years ago, averaged 10.4 points and 3.9 rebounds last season while starting nine of 27 games. Peterson averaged 10.1 points and led the team in three-pointers, connecting on 53-of-127 attempts for a team-high 41.7 percentage. He ranks sixth on the Bulldogs' all-time list with 116 three-pointers made.

Truman has more depth at all the positions in 2000-01, but the numbers have yet to be proven, Schrader says.

The Bulldogs return four other lettermen from last year, including junior guard Peter Aydt (Elgin, Ill./St. Edwards), sophomore forwards Jiri Mikl (Ostrava, Czech Republic/University Laboratory HS-Urbana, Ill.) and Eric Wade (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit North) and junior center Dan Mailath (Tulsa, Okla./Bishop Kelley).

Junior guard Nathan Owen (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Southeast Missouri State University) will see his first game action in 2000-01. He transferred to Truman last year, but redshirted the season.

Other returning squadmen include Dusty Bruner (Galesburg, Ill.), A.J. Crum (Mt. Sterling, Ill./Univ. of Dubuque), and Bill Farr (Kirksville, Mo.).

The team looks to offset its graduation losses with several newcomers. Sophomore Adam Glosier (St. Charles, Mo./U.S. Military Academy) transferred from Army, where he started every game and led the Knights in rebounds, blocked shots and steals as a freshman. Junior Scott Coykendall (Elmwood, Ill./Spoon River JC) comes to Truman after earning junior college all-America and Region XXIV player of the year honors at Spoon River.

Another transfer, junior guard Matt Martin (Kirksville, Mo./Moberly Area CC), will probably redshirt this season.

Truman has also added several freshmen to the mix. Forward Matt Beran (Victor, Iowa/HLV-Victor) fits the Bulldog mold as a versatile athlete. Eric Delaney (Marceline, Mo.) and Aaron Mueller (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran North) could see some time at the guard spots.

The 'Dogs have also added a junior varsity program, which could provide a few more players for the varsity club. Freshman guard Torre Finley (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield), who came up from the JV team, dressed with the varsity squad for the exhibition game, and Schrader has indicated that freshman Bret Maxwell (Chariton, Iowa) could also be a candidate to move up with the varsity team.

Among Truman's key losses to graduation are Cory Parker, the school's all-time leading scorer and a two-time all-America. Two-time academic all-America Jason Reinberg is also gone, as is Jason Ramthun, Andy Guethle and Jason Ward. However, Guethle, who started every game over the past four years at point guard, still remains with the Bulldogs, but is now serving as a graduate assistant coach.

TRUMAN VS. MISSOURI-KANSAS CITY: The Bulldogs come into Friday's contest after suffering a 71-55 exhibition loss on Nov. 8 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Glosier, Aydt and Mikl each scored eight points to lead the Bulldogs, while Coykendall finished with seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Peterson added six points, six assists and five rebounds.

The Bulldogs shot 38.2 percent from the field, including 36 percent (9-of-25) in the first half. From the three-point line, Truman connected on 33 percent (9-of-27), while hitting just 4-of-8 attempts at the foul line.

SOUTHEAST MISSOURI: The Indians open the regular season on Friday as well and are coming off of an exhibition season that saw them go 2-0 with a 106-70 win over Team Reebok and a 85-67 victory over the Dreambuilders. Senior guard Amory Sanders leads Southeast in scoring, averaging 20 points per game. Sanders was hot in the exhibition contests, hitting a combined 11-of-16 field goals, including 7-of-12 from beyond the arc and 11-of-13 free throws. Senior Nyah Jones, a 6-11 center, averaged 17 points and 5.5 rebounds in the two exhibition contests.

SEMO returns only two starters from last year's team that posted a 24-7 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament after winning the OVC Tournament. Guard Michael Stokes, a first-team preseason all-OVC selection, returns to his starting point guard spot after earning third-team all-conference honors last year. Guard Antonio Short also returns to the team, but will miss Friday's game due to a violation of team rules.

SERIES RECORD: Southeast Missouri leads 76-66 ... The Indians were members of the MIAA until 1991 when they left to pursue Division I status. Truman and SEMO last met in 1997, with the Indians coming away with a 79-65 victory.

COACHES RECORDS: Bulldog head coach Jack Schrader enters his sixth season at Truman and has a record of 73-67.

Southeast Missouri head coach Gary Garner is in his fourth year with the Indians with a record of 58-29. He is 305-191 in his 18th year of collegiate coaching.

UP NEXT: The Bulldogs will have their home opener on Tuesday when they take on Lincoln (Mo.) at 7 p.m.
