TRUMAN: In their matchup on Thursday with Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, the Bulldogs will close out the 2000 home portion of their schedule and will look to climb above .500 for the first time this season. Truman evened its season record with a 78-72 win on Tuesday night over Monmouth (Ill.). The win marked the second in a row for the 'Dogs, who are 3-1 at home this season.
Including the Tuesday victory, the Bulldogs have won three of their last four games. On Dec. 5, the 'Dogs won 75-46 at home over Westminster, following a 76-64 road loss at Drury. Truman also has a 92-59 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange to its credit after opening the season with losses at Division I Southeast Missouri (70-59) and to Lincoln (78-69) at home.
Four players currently average double figures in scoring for the 'Dogs, led by senior forward Brian Brown (Centralia, Mo.) at 19.2 points a game. Truman trailed early on, but took the lead for good on a Coykendall layup with 3:17 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs would extend the lead to seven points, 41-34, at halftime before starting the second half on a 14-5 run that put the 'Dogs up by 16, 55-39.
Monmouth whittled away at the lead and got it down to three points with 3:53 left, but could get no closer as Truman put it out of reach with a 10-4 spurt.
Coykendall's 23 points came on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and he also added a team-high five assists. Brown finished with 18 points and six rebounds for Truman, while Peterson and Owen had 14 and 12 points, respectively. Freshman Matt Beran (Victor, Iowa/HLV-Victor) grabbed 10 rebounds and Peterson added to his team-leading steal total with four picks.
ABOUT SIU-EDWARDSVILLE (3-4): The Cougars have won two of three, including a 91-87 victory on Monday over Oakland City (Ind.). SIUE also earned a 77-72 conference win over IUPU-Ft. Wayne on Dec. 2, before falling 99-78 to No. 3 Southern Indiana in another GLVC clash. To open the season, the Cougars took an 89-52 decision over Eureka (Ill.), before dropping three straight to Northwood (Mich.) (78-74), Wayne State (Mich.) (68-61) and conference foe St. Joseph's (Ind.) (77-65).
Junior forward Tim Rose is the lone Cougar in double figures, averaging 14.7 points. But a host of others are close to the double-digit barrier, including freshman guard Wes Pickering (9.7 ppg), sophomore guard Luke Humphrey (9.6 ppg) and junior forward Marty Perry (9.0 ppg). Senior forward Nick Hartwig, who averages 7.4 points, leads the team on the glass, averaging 6.6 per game. In their win over Oakland City on Monday, six of the eight Cougars who played in the game reached double figures, led by Humphrey's 18 points. Perry added 17 and Rose 14. SIUE shot well over its season 72.0 free throw percentage, connecting on 90.9 percent (30-of-33) from the charity stripe. By contrast, Oakland City was just 4-of-7 at the line.

BULLDOGS AMONG CAREER LEADERS: Brown is quickly gaining ground on both the Bulldog career scoring and rebounding charts. With 959 career points, he now needs 41 more points to become the 18th member of Truman's 1,000-point club and 58 to tie Steve Liford for 17th on the all-time scoring list.
Brown has also topped the 400-rebound plateau this season. With 413 career boards, he is one away from Johnnie Wesley, who stands 24th in career rebounds. Brown also ranks ninth in Truman history with his 227 career free throws and is closing in on the top 25 for career assists, needing just seven more to catch the 134 posted by Randy Brock in 1991-92.
Peterson is closing in on the 700-point plateau, as he now has 693 career points. He currently ranks sixth in career three-pointers, and needs 39 more triples to catch fifth place, Jason Ramthun. Peterson also has 162 career free throws made and ranks 18th on that list.
