TRUMAN: The Bulldogs haven't played for a week due to the holidays, but enter Saturday's matchup on a three-game winning streak after collecting an 87-59 victory over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Dec. 21. A win on Saturday at Missouri-St. Louis would give Truman its first road win of the year and its best winning streak since winning its first seven games to start the 1999-00 campaign. The three-game skein matches the Bulldogs' 3-0 stretch that they ended the regular season with last year.
Also on the win streak for the 'Dogs is a 78-72 decision over Monmouth (Ill.) and a 75-46 triumph versus Westminster. All told, the Truman is 3-1 for the month of December with the only blemish a 76-64 loss at Drury. In November, the Bulldogs opened with a 70-59 loss at Southeast Missouri, then suffered a 78-69 home loss to Lincoln before getting their first win of the year in a 92-59 win over Hannibal-LaGrange.
Saturday's game marks Truman's final game of the 2000 portion of the schedule and its final tune up before conference play tips off on Jan. 3 with the 'Dogs hosting Central Missouri State.
TRUMAN vs. SIU-EDWARDSVILLE (DEC. 21): The Bulldogs shot 53.8 percent from three-point range and 55.4 percent from the field in an 87-59 win over Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. And, for the second time in as many games, a Bulldog put up a career night. This time it was senior Mike Peterson's (Mason City, Iowa) turn, as he charted a career-best 27 points on 8-of-12 shooting. He led a Truman attack that featured 14 three-pointers, the second-most in a single game in team history.
Peterson scored 18 second-half points as Truman never let the Cougars closer than nine after the break. Truman led 43-28 at halftime and extended the margin to as many as 30 in the final 20 minutes.
The 'Dogs never trailed in the game, which marked their 21st win in their last 23 non-conference home games.
Truman was up by seven points with eight minutes left in the first half when sophomore Jiri Mikl (Ostrava, Czech Republic) sparked an 11-0 run with a three-pointer. Freshman Aaron Mueller (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran North) followed with a three of his own before junior Peter Aydt (Elgin, Ill./St. Edwards) hit two free throws. Junior Scott Coykendall (Elmwood, Ill./Spoon River JC) capped the rally with a triple of his own as Truman's lead jumped to 31-13.
Peterson, who was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc, added four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Junior Nathan Owen (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Southeast Missouri State Univ.) contributed 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting with three three-pointers and Coykendall added 10 points and nine boards. Freshman Matt Beran (Victor, Iowa/HLV Victor) and senior Brian Brown (Centralia, Mo.) combined for all seven of the Bulldogs blocked shots, with Beran tallying a career-best four.
ABOUT MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS (3-5): The Rivermen come into the game with a 3-5 overall record, including an 0-3 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. However, UMSL has won two of its three home games this season, while going 1-4 on the road. The Rivermen's latest game saw them fall 84-79 at Lincoln. In all, UMSL has dropped five of its last six after a 2-0 start.
Three players average double figures in scoring for UMSL, including senior guard Greg Ross whose average of 12.9 points leads the team. In UMSL's loss to Lincoln, Ross (27 points) and Hamilton (21) combined for 48 points, with Ross, an 86.4 percent free throw shooter, converting on 13-of-15 foul shots. The Rivermen were outrebounded 40-25 and shot 46.2 percent from the field, compared to 50 percent for Lincoln.
UMSL opened the year with a 68-51 home win over William Penn (Iowa) and then collected a 76-62 road victory at Northwood (Mich.). After a 101-70 loss at Kentucky Wesleyan and a 69-65 defeat at Bellarmine (Ky.), the Rivermen were edged by Washburn (Kan.) 65-63 at home. Quincy (Ill.) then handed the Rivermen a 64-48 road loss, but UMSL stopped the skid with a 72-57 home win over Benedictine (Kan.) before falling on Dec. 20 to Lincoln.
