Truman: The Bulldogs come in with a 1-3 record on the season. Truman picked up its lone win last week in a 92-59 decision over Hannibal-LaGrange. The three losses came against Division I Southeast Missouri, Lincoln and, most recently, to Drury on Saturday. In their first four games, the 'Dogs have made their presence felt on the glass, out-rebounding three of their first four opponents. Truman averages 42.5 rebounds per game and is holding its opponents to an average of 36.0 boards for a margin of +6.5 rebounds per game. Senior forward Brian Brown (Centralia, Mo.) is currently averaging a double-double, with team-highs of 20.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He is joined in double-figure scoring by senior guard Mike Peterson (Mason City, Iowa) (11.5 ppg). Junior forward Scott Coykendall (Elmwood, Ill./Spoon River JC) (9.5 ppg) and junior guard Nathan Owen (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Southeast Missouri State) (9.0 ppg) aren't far back of the senior duo.
Truman vs. Drury: The Bulldogs and Panthers waged a tight battle in the first half with four ties and seven lead changes, but Drury pulled away in the second half, handing Truman a 76-64 road loss on Saturday in Springfield. The 'Dogs held an early 14-9 lead in the first half after a three-pointer from Aaron Mueller (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran North) and an Owen layup, but Drury went on a 13-3 run to take the lead and ended the half on a 7-3 spurt for a 31-28 halftime advantage. The second half saw the Panthers extend the lead as wide as 16 points. Truman closed to within eigth with 3:22 to play, but could get no closer. Brown led all scorers with 22 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the year. Peterson finished with 14 points and a career high nine rebounds, while Owen added 12 points.
Westminister: Westminster brings a 1-4 record into Tuesday's game, and has lost four straight after winning its season opener 89-54 over Messenger College. The Blue Jays suffered a 91-86 overtime loss to Earlham College before falling 94-74 to Washington University. Westminster's latest losses were a 69-67 decision to Kendall College and a 69-55 defeat at the hands of Elmhurst College. Junior forward Jason Overbey leads the Blue Jays in scoring, averaging 13.2 points, while sophomore guard Chris Wilson averages 12.0. On the glass, Westminster is paced by freshman forward Tim Smith (4.4 rpg) and freshman center Dejan Dokovic (4.2 rpg). Dokovic also averages 9.2 points and has connected on 18-of-28 attempts from the field (.643). The Jays have been out-rebounded by an average of 7.2 rebounds per game this season.
Series Record: Truman leads 10-5 ... The Bulldogs have won six in a row over the Blue Jays in this series, which dates back to Truman's initial season of basketball (1919-20) ... Westminster was the fifth opponent the Bulldogs ever played ... The 'Dogs won the last meeting between the two, 85-61, at Pershing Arena on Dec. 4, 1993 ... Westminster claimed the first two games over Truman, winning 57-39 on Feb. 6, 1920 and 23-16 the very next day.
Coaches records: Bulldog head coach Jack Schrader is in his sixth season at Truman and has a record of 74-70 for a winning percentage of .514. Matt Mitchell is in his third season at the helm of the Blue Jays. He has a record of 20-34 (.370) both for his career at at Westminster.
INJURY REPORT: Truman sophomore center Adam Glosier (St. Charles, Mo./U.S. Military Academy) is out indefinitely with a knee injury.
BULLDOGS AMONG CAREER LEADERS: Brown is quickly gaining ground on both the Bulldog career scoring and rebounding charts. He surpassed the 900-point plateau on last week and now has 926 career points. He needs 74 more points to become the 18th member of Truman's 1,000-point club and 91 points to tie Steve Liford for 17th on the all-time scoring list. Brown also went over the 400-career rebound mark on Saturday with his 11 caroms. With 404 career boards, he is 10 away from Johnnie Wesley, who stands 24th in career rebounds. Brown also moved into a ninth-place tie in career free throws with Justin Matthews. Brown now has made 220 career charity tosses. Peterson is closing in on the 700-point plateau, as he now has 677 career points. He currently ranks sixth in career three-pointers, and needs 41 more triples to catch fifth place, Jason Ramthun. Peterson also has 162 career free throws made and ranks 18th on that list.
BULLDOGS IN THE MIAA: As a team, the Bulldogs lead the MIAA in rebounding offense with 49.3 rebounds per game 4.6 rebounds per game more than the next MIAA squad. Truman also leads the league in offensive rebounds (16.75 pg) and defensive rebounds (32.50 pg). The 'Dogs are also second in the conference in assists (19.75 per game) and three-point field goals made (7.50 pg).
Individually, Brown has moved up to second in the conference in scoring, averaging 20.5 points per game. He's also second in rebounding (10.3 rpg) and seventh in field goal percentage (.527).
Peterson is tied for second in free throw percentage (.917). fifth in steals (2.25 per game), seventh in three-point field goal percentage (.368) and tied for seventh in three-pointers made (1.75 per game).
Freshman forward Matt Beran (Victor, Iowa/HLV-Victor) is ninth in rebounding
(6.5 rpg) and tied for ninth in blocked shots (0.75 per game).
