Truman: The Bulldogs will be looking for their first MIAA victory of the season when they begin a three-game road trip at Washburn (Kan.). Other stops on Truman's longest road trip of the season are at St. Joseph, Mo. and at Bolivar, Mo.
After having their three-game winning streak snapped just over a week ago, the 'Dogs have lost three in a row, including Saturday's 75-73 heartbreaker against Missouri Southern at Pershing Arena.
In non-conference action, Truman picked up wins over Hannibal-LaGrange, Westminster, Monmouth (Ill.) and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The team's losses came at the hands of Southeast Missouri, Lincoln, Drury, Missouri-St. Louis, Central Missouri and Missouri Southern.
Truman vs. Missouri Southern (Jan. 6): The Bulldogs suffered a tough loss on Saturday afternoon as Missouri Southern escaped Pershing Arena with a 75-73 win over Truman.
The 'Dogs led for much of the game after starting the contest on a 20-9 run. After MSSC rallied for a 34-34 tie at the half, Truman fell behind by as many as six early in the second half. A 9-2 Bulldog run gave the 'Dogs a 45-44 lead with 13:56 to play, and the team extended the margin to six points midway through the period. Truman continued to lead by six with 3:07 to play, but the Lions ended the game on a 10-2 run, highlighted by Terry Shumpert's game-tying three-pointer with 1:31 to play and then capped by his winning jumper in the lane with three seconds on the clock.
The Bulldogs had one last chance to get the win, but junior Nathan Owen (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Southeast Missouri State)'s three-point attempt missed the mark and time expired before a putback attempt could be made.
Senior Brian Brown (Centralia, Mo.) led the 'Dogs with 22 points and nine rebounds, while junior Scott Coykendall (Elmwood, Ill./Spoon River JC) finished with 14 points and six boards. Owen and senior Mike Peterson (Mason City, Iowa) each had 10 points. Sophomore Jiri Mikl (Ostrava, Czech Republic/University Laboratory HS-Urbana, Ill.) gave Truman a big lift off the bench, scoring nine points.
About the Ichabods (8-2, 1-1): The Ichabods captured their initial MIAA victory of the season when they won on the road 88-59 on Saturday at Southwest Baptist. WU lost its conference opener on the road by virtue of an 83-73 decision at Missouri Southern. The preseason conference favorite, Washburn is 5-0 at home this season and enters Monday's game with the 'Dogs having actually played 11 games this year, but, like Truman, is awaiting word from the NCAA on whether it must count a loss to a Division I squad. WU fell at Kansas during the non-conference portion of its schedule.
Based on statistics from 11 games (excluding the KU game), four Ichabods average double figures in the scoring column, led by senior Eric Carter at 15.3 points per game. Senior Ewan Auguste, the reigning MIAA MVP, averages 14.5 points to go with a team-best 6.1 rebounds (10th in MIAA). Senior Randolph Williams and sophomore Ryan Murphy round out WU's double-digit scorers, averaging 12.7 and 10.3 points, respectively.
The Ichabods are one of the MIAA's best shooting clubs, as witnessed by their No. 1 ranking in field goal percentage (.487, based on 11 games) and three-point field goal percentage (.390, based on 11 games).
Auguste is third in the league with a .585 field goal percentage, while Carter is 10th at .471. Murphy is fifth in free throw percentage (.805), and junior guard Shannon Kruger is sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.432) Carter stands tied for eighth in three-point percentage (.400) and threes made per game (2.00). Auguste also ranks eighth in blocks (0.91 pg) and B.J. Ross second in assist-turnover ratio (2.69).
The Ichabods have victories this season over Evangel (106-90), Friends (93-57), Rockhurst (95-75), Newman (78-69), Missouri-St. Louis (65-53), Lincoln (94-86), Benedictine (88-63) and Southwest Baptist. Excluding their KU loss (99-56), WU's other defeats came at the hands of Western Washington (72-70) in Las Vegas, and Missouri Southern.
