TRUMAN (4-7, 0-3 MIAA): The Bulldogs are on the cusp of being a 2-1 team in conference play, but have dropped their last two to two of the league's preseason favorites, Missouri Southern and No. 21 Washburn (Kan.), by a combined four points. Both defeats have come by identical 75-73 scores, and have seen Truman on the verge of victory only to fall short in the final moments.

Still looking for their first MIAA win of the year, the Bulldogs continue on the road on Wednesday night, battling Missouri Western, a team the 'Dogs have defeated in two of the last three meetings.

Truman finished the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 4-4 record, including a three-game winning streak. The squad has wins over Hannibal-LaGrange, Westminster, Monmouth and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Truman's non-conference losses came at the hands of Division I Southeast Missouri, Lincoln, Drury and Missouri-St. Louis. The 'Dogs opened conference play a week ago with an 81-67 loss to Central Missouri, before dropping the two heartbreakers to Missouri Southern and Washburn, respectively.

ABOUT THE GRIFFONS (7-3, 2-1 MIAA): Missouri Western opened the season by winning five of their first six games, but has since gone 2-2, including an MIAA-opening 64-61 loss to Pittsburg State (Kan.). The Griffons bounced back with a 91-67 win over Central Missouri, and then won their second conference game of the year on Monday night over Emporia State (Kan.), 87-54.

The Griffons opened the season with four straight wins, defeating Abilene Christian (Texas), 92-65, Colorado-Colorado Springs, 89-71, Rockhurst, 84-62, and Lees-McRae (N.C.), 112-70. They then lost 72-60 to Michigan Tech, before defeating Barry (Fla.), 84-83, to open December. MWSC then lost 75-73 to Lynn (Fla.), before starting conference action.

Senior forward Reggie Alexander leads the Griffons in almost all categories. A second-team all-MIAA pick last year, he paces the squad with 18.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and a .571 field goal percentage. He also leads the team in three-pointers (18) and three-point field goal percentage (.500). Alexander ranks third in the MIAA in scoring, seventh in rebounding and third in field goal percentage. He's second in three-point field goal percentage, third in blocked shots and 10th in threes made per game (1.80).

Three other Griffons average double figures in scoring; senior guard Charles Bailey averages 15.9 points, junior forward Lamont Turner 11.4 and senior forward Souvenir Callwood 10.1.

Bailey is seventh in the conference's scoring race, while also ranking 14th in rebounding (5.8 rpg), eighth in field goal percentage (.500) and assists (3.50 pg), and fifth in assist-turnover ratio (1.52). Junior guard Nick Orr is 10th in the conference in steals (1.60 pg).

COACHES RECORDS: Bulldog head coach Jack Schrader is in his sixth season at Truman and has a record of 77-74 for a winning percentage of .510. He is 2-8 against MWSC.

Tom Smith is in his 13th year with the Griffons and the 26th of his collegiate coaching career. At MWSC he is 263-106. For his career, Smith is 433-290.

BULLDOGS IN THE MIAA (Through games of Jan. 8): In the latest MIAA statistics report, Truman continued to lead the MIAA in defensive rebounds (26.18 pg), while ranking third in the league in field goal percentage defense (opponents shooting .440), rebounding defense (32.9 rpg allowed) and rebounding margin (+4.1 rpg). The 'Dogs are fourth in scoring defense (68.4 ppg allowed) and three-pointers made (6.82 pg).

Individually, senior forward Brian Brown (Centralia, Mo.) ranks in the top 10 in four categories. He's sixth in scoring (16.2 ppg) and rebounding (7.5 rpg), seventh in field goal percentage (.520) and tied for ninth in blocks (0.91 pg).

Junior forward Scott Coykendall (Elmwood, Ill./Spoon River College) ranks among conference leaders in three categories. He's ninth in field goal percentage (.491), 12th in rebounding (6.0 rpg) and 17th in scoring (13.5 ppg).

Senior guard Mike Peterson (Mason City, Iowa) is in the top 10 in steals (fifth, 2.36 pg), three-point field goal percentage (sixth, .442) and three-pointers made (seventh, 2.09 pg).

Freshman forward Matt Beran (Victor, Iowa/HLV-Victor) is fourth in blocked shots (1.36 pg) and ninth in rebounding (6.3 rpg).

TRUMAN vs. WASHBURN (Jan. 8): The Bulldogs led 63-57 with 4:58 to play, but couldn't hold on Monday night, as No. 21 Washburn rallied for a 75-73 win over Truman. It marked the 'Dogs second two-point loss in as many games.

After the Ichabods led 38-36 at halftime, Truman took its first lead since midway through the first half when Coykendall hit two free throws with 16:17 to play. WU reclaimed the lead seconds later, and went up by four with 11:57 to go. Sophomore Jiri Mikl (Ostrava, Czech Republic/University Laboratory HS-Urbana, Ill.) connected on a three-pointer that trimmed the lead to one and keyed the 'Dogs on a 16-6 run, which would ultimately extend the margin to 63-57 with 4:58 to play. But the Bulldogs couldn't hold on, as Washburn outscored Truman 18-10 over the final 4:58.

Two Coykendall free throws tied the score at 68 with 1:28 to go, but the Ichabods hit five of their last six free throws to hold on. Truman had a chance for the win in the waning seconds, but Coykendall's three-point attempt was off the mark.

Coykendall finished with 20 points to lead five Bulldogs in double-figures. Mikl matched his career high with 13 points, while Brown and junior Nathan Owen (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Southeast Missouri State) each added 11. Peterson ended with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Beran charted six rebounds and two blocked shots.

BULLDOGS AMONG CAREER LEADERS: With his 11 points on Monday night, Brown (1,022 points) moved into 17th on the Bulldogs all-time scoring list. He now trails 16th-place Lou Gregory by 27 points.

Brown ranks 22nd on the career rebounding chart, as he now has 445 for his career. In career assists, Brown's 140 ranks him 25th on that chart. Also on Monday, he tied Terry Bussard for seventh in career free throws, with 238.

Peterson is within 25 three-pointers of tying fifth-place Jason Ramthun (164 treys made) on the career three-pointers list. In addition, he's 17th in career free throws (173) and 20th in career assists (165). Peterson also has 762 career points.

INJURY REPORT: Freshman guard Eric Delaney (Marceline, Mo.) is day-to-day with an ankle injury. Sophomore forward Eric Wade (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit North) is out indefinitely after sustaining minor injuries in a car accident. Sophomore center Adam Glosier (St. Charles, Mo./U.S. Military Academy) will likely miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

5-Peter Aydt: A junior guard, Aydt had a career-high seven points in Truman's loss to Lincoln ... with 28 points on the season, has already surpassed his point total last year (16) ... has played in every game with eight starts ... ranks sixth on the team in assists ... led the team in assists versus Hannibal-LaGrange and Drury.

14-Eric Delaney: Delaney has seen action in four games this year, but has missed time of late due to an ankle injury ... freshman guard is tied for team lead with two steals in the game versus Southeast Missouri ... scored his lone point of the year in the Bulldogs' win over Hannibal-LaGrange ... had two rebounds in each of the wins over SIU-Edwardsville and Westminster.

00-Bill Farr: Scored his only two points in his only game of the season, the win over SIU-Edwardsville ... a redshirt freshman forward.

15-Torre Finley: Played in seven games, averaging 6.7 minutes an outing ... has five points, five rebounds and three assists ... scored three-points in the win over Hannibal-LaGrange ... walk-on guard who moved up to the varsity from the junior varsity squad.

Adam Glosier: A sophomore center, Glosier started and played 20 minutes in the 'Dogs season-opening loss to Southeast Missouri ... he scored five points and had three rebounds and a steal ... is likely lost for the rest of the year with an injured posterior cruciate ligament in his knee ... transfer from the U.S. Military Academy (West Point).

32-Cory Long: Long's only varsity playing time came in a brief stint in Truman's win over SIU-Edwardsville ... a walk-on guard, playing primarily with the junior varsity.

50-Dan Mailath: Mailath had a career-high five points in Truman's win over Hannibal-LaGrange ... has played in seven of the 11 games this year, collecting his first two career starts ... has 10 points, seven rebounds three assists and a block in 39 minutes of action this year ... a junior center.

Bret Maxwell: Maxwell played briefly in Truman's win over Hannibal-LaGrange, his only playing time of the year ... a walk-on forward, playing mostly with the junior varsity.

MISSOURI WESTERN AT TRUMAN (JAN. 12, 2000): Truman bounced back to upset 18th-ranked Missouri Western 75-73. The 'Dogs jumped to an early lead against the Griffons, using a 13-0 run to lead 21-8 with 11:36 to play in the first half. MWSC battled back to take the lead late in the first half, but the Bulldogs took a 38-36 advantage into the locker room.

After the break, the 'Dogs pushed the lead as high as eight before MWSC tied the score at 64 with 5:55 to play. Truman got the lead back with three key three-point plays in the last four minutes of the game. Brown scored six of his 13 points in the final 3:52 of the game, converting two of the team's three-point plays.

The Griffons still had a chance to steal the win in the final seconds, but a last second three-point attempt was off the mark.

Jason Ramthun led all scorers with 24 points. He was 9-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, and charted five rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Cory Parker ended with 16 points and six rebounds. Brown finished with 13 points and six rebounds.

TRUMAN AT MISSOURI WESTERN (FEB. 9, 2000): Truman jumped to a 6-0 lead in the game's first three minutes, but from there Missouri

Western seized control, outscoring the 'Dogs 49-14 over the remainder of the first half en route to a 96-57 win.

Brown finished with 17 points to lead the Bulldogs, while Parker added 13. The 'Dogs were out-rebounded 41-30. The Griffons, who came in ranked No. 1 in the nation in field goal percentage, did little to hurt that statistic on Wednesday, shooting 60.7 percent from the field, compared to 33.3 percent for Truman. MWSC was also 53.8 percent from three-point range, while the Bulldogs hit just 17.6 percent of their threes.

Randy Dickerson had 19 points to pace MWSC, while Reggie Alexander added 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
