HARRY GALLATIN DAY IS SATURDAY: Saturday marks a historic day for the Bulldogs, the day when the No. 44 worn by former Bulldog legend, seven-time NBA All-Star and basketball hall of famer Harry "The Horse" Gallatin will be retired. A banquet on Friday night in the Georgian Room in the Student Union Building on the Campus of Truman State University will take place honoring Gallatin before his number retirement ceremony takes place at halftime of Saturday's men's game. The game is set to tip off at 3:30 p.m.

Gallatin played at Truman in the 1946-47 and 1947-48 seasons when the 'Dogs went 59-4 and made back-to-back trips to the NAIA National Tournament. He went on to a 10-year NBA playing career, playing nine seasons with the New York Knicks, the team that made him their first-round draft pick, and another with the Detroit Pistons. Gallatin was a first-team All-NBA selection in 1954 and second team in 1955.

Gallatin later coached men's basketball at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, before returning to the NBA as the St. Louis Hawks' head coach. The 1962-63 NBA Coach of the Year, Gallatin led St. Louis to a 48-32 record his first season and had two more years with the Hawks before coaching the Knicks for two years.

In 1967 he was named Dean of Students at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, where he was asked to organize an intercollegiate athletics program. He coached basketball there for two years and served as athletic director for five years. He later would take a full-time teaching position at SIUE and became men's golf coach in 1973. He helped lead the team to 17 trips to the NCAA Division II Championships before he retired as an instructor in 1991 and as men's golf coach in 1992.

Gallatin was inducted into the Truman Hall of Fame in 1984 and into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991. He is also a member of the Missouri Basketball Hall of Fame, the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame and the NAIA Hall of Fame.
