Men's Basketball Team Signs Mark Huppe for 2001-02 Season

Truman State University head men's basketball coach Jack Schrader announced today the signing of a new player for the 2001-02 season.

Mark Huppe (pronounced hupp-ee), a 6-1 guard from Overland Park, Kan., signed a national letter-of-intent to play basketball for the Bulldogs this upcoming season.

"Mark is the top senior guard coming out of the Kansas City area this year," Schrader said. "He's a great shooter, a great scorer and will be a great addition to the Bulldog program."

Huppe averaged 21.6 points, 3.9 assists and 2.2 steals per game as a senior, helping his St. Thomas Aquinas High School squad to a 16-6 record. A member of the Kansas Class 6A All-State team, Huppe shot 49 percent (147-of-301) from the field, 47 percent (96-of-205) from three-point range and a school single-season record 88 percent at the foul line (84-of-96).

He was a two-time athlete of the week selection by both the Kansas City Star and Metro Sports. Huppe was also picked for first-team all-East Kansas League honors and was named co-MVP of the conference. Additionally, he was named all-metro and was one of five finalists for the Kansas City Metro Area Player of the Year award.

Huppe is St. Thomas Aquinas' all-time leader in points (1,163), three-pointers (242) and career free throw percentage (83 percent). He ended his career having hit a three-pointer in 64 consecutive games, a mark that is believed to be a Kansas state record.

The Bulldogs are expected to return three starters from the 2000-01 squad which made its fifth consecutive appearance in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament and finished 7-20 overall.
