Men's Cross Country Takes First at SIU-Edwardsville

Led by five runners in the top eight, the Truman State University men's cross country team opened its 2001 season with a victory at the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Open on Saturday.

The Bulldogs finished with a score of 22 to outdistance second-place SIU-Edwardsville by 32. Missouri-Rolla came in third with 55, followed by MacMurray with 120.

For Truman, senior Ben Rosario (St. Louis/SLUH) placed first overall with a time of 26:10.33 on the 8,000-meter course. Sophomore teammate Alan Heincker (Dittmer, Mo./Grandview) was second in 26:39.68. Junior Pat Boyle (St. Charles, Mo.) placed fourth with a time of 27:07.40. Senior Mark DeBold (St. Charles, Ill./Lincoln-Way) was seventh in 27:23.05 and sophomore Dan Boyle (St. Charles, Mo.) was eighth in 27:27.90.

In all, the 'Dogs, who are coming off a 15th-place finish in the nation last year, placed 10 runners in the top 19.

Up next, Truman will compete at the University of Kansas/Bob Timmons Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8.
