Men's Golf Ties for Fourth at MIAA Championship

The Truman State University men's golf team shot a second-day low round of 308 and rallied for a fourth-place tie at the 2001 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championship on Tuesday. The Bulldogs finished with a 54-hole total of 961 to tie with Southwest Baptist University for fourth place.

Each Truman player shot a round in the 70s on Tuesday, the final day of the tournament. Senior Jasen Matyas (Hannibal, Mo.) led the way with a 73 on Tuesday and finished tied for fifth overall with a 233 (77-83-73). Fellow senior Justin Brewer (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) shot 241 (83-79-79) and tied for 17th.

Brewer and Matyas averaged 77.2 and 78.9 strokes, respectively, this spring to lead the team. For the year, including the fall season, Brewer averaged a team-best 77.5 strokes, while Matyas was second with 79.8.

After the opening day, which included 36 holes, Truman stood in sixth place with a 653 (329-324). The 'Dogs were five strokes back of a fourth-place tie between Southwest Baptist and Washburn (Kan.) and had 15 strokes between themselves and third-place Missouri Southern.

But the 308 turned in by Truman on Tuesday matched the low round of the second day and enabled the Bulldogs to pull ahead of Washburn, tie Southwest Baptist and finish six strokes behind third-place Missouri Southern. Central Missouri, which also used a second-day 308 to vault past Missouri Western atop the leaderboard, won the championship with a 930 (314-308-308).

Juniors Lou Dersch (Charles City, Iowa) and Rick Ewing (Warson Woods, Mo./Webster Groves) tied for 21st overall with scores of 244. Dersch shot 82-83 on the first day, but charted a 79 in the final round. Ewing had marks of 87 and 79 on Day 1 and carded a 78 on Tuesday.

Sophomore T.J. Erhart (Jefferson City, Mo.) shot 78 in the final round after tallies of 88 and 84 on Monday.

In the final MIAA season standings, Truman equaled its finish of last year by placing fifth with 21 points.

The Bulldogs will begin their fall 2001 campaign in September.
