TRUMAN: After earning just one win over their previous six games, the Bulldogs got back on track Sunday with a 2-1 victory in double overtime at Indiana University/Purdue University-Fort Wayne. The two teams battled scorelessly until the 87th minute when Truman sniper Matt Byers (Moville, Iowa/Woodbury Central) struck for his 12th goal of the season, assisted by fellow forward Ryan Swan (Perth, Scotland/Kemper Military J.C.). The Mastodons retaliated almost immediately with Shawn Cairer's unassisted goal. The match stretched into the 118th minute, when Bulldog freshman Ricky Vigil (St. Louis/St. Louis University High) netted his first collegiate goal for the Truman victory. Senior captain Jeremy Jackson (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame North) earned the assist on the game-winner. Junior David Wiebenga (Raytown, Mo./Raytown South) earned the win in net for the 'Dogs, appearing in relief of starter TJ Dube (Columbia, Mo./Hickman), who suffered an arm injury in the second overtime period.
SERIES RECORD & RECAP: Saturday's encounter will be the first ever between Truman and Barry. The Bulldogs have clashed with Lynn once before, in Florida in 1996, when the 'Dogs came out on the short end of a 3-0 result.
THE POLLS: Truman climbs two spots to No. 23 in the National Soccer Coaches of America/Adidas national rankings and remains No. 3 in the Central Region. Barry is No. 1 in the national rankings and Lynn is No. 12.
'DOGS IN NCAA STATS: Matt Byers remains one of the most torrid offensive forces in the nation. Byers is currently the 12th most potent scorer with 1.09 goals per game.
THE DISH ON BARRY: The Buccaneers are 10-1, with their only loss of the season coming 1-0 to St. Thomas (Fla.) back on Sept. 5. Sophomore forward Alen Marcina leads the offense with 12 goals and 25 points. Sophomore goalkeeper Ron Goguen has allowed only nine goals in 12 games, leading Barry to the No. 4 defense in the nation with a scant 0.54 goals allowed per game.
THE DISH ON LYNN: The Fighting Knights shot out of the gate with an eight-game win streak and now stand at 10-2. Senior forward Josh Kristowski's 10 goals and six assists pace the fifth-best offense in the nation (scoring 3.75 goals per game). Sophomore 'keeper Jake Banas has allowed only five goals and boasts a 0.80 goals against average.
