Men's Soccer Heads To Quincy For Soccer Bowl Action

ON TAP: Truman takes its 2-0 record to Illinois this weekend to compete in the Quincy University Soccer Bowl. The Bulldogs will take on host Quincy at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and then clash with Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

RANKINGS: The success of the last few seasons leaves the 'Dogs entrenched in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas preseason Top 25. The 'Dogs begin 2000 ranked No. 12 in Division II.

SERIES INFO: The Bulldogs defeated each of this weekend's opponents last season, leaving the all-time marks at 5-3-1 against the QU Hawks and 2-2 against the SIUE Cougars.

OVER THE WEEKEND: Truman kicked of the 2000 campaign with a bang last weekend by scoring nine goals and allowing none in sweeping a pair of games at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Classic.

The 'Dogs opened the weekend with a 5-0 pounding of Northern Kentucky University, scoring all five goals in a 15-minute stretch late in the first period. Electric forwards Matt Byers (Moville, Iowa/Woodbury Central) and Ryan Swan (Perth, Scotland/Kemper Military J.C.), the very same combination that netted over 50 percent of the team's goals in '99, netted a pair of goals apiece. Michael Roth (St. Charles, Mo./Desmet) and Brett Coppage (Kansas City, Mo./Rockhurst) assisted on Byers' first, Justin Shew (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) helped out on Byers' second, and Heine Andersen (Helsingor, Denmark) dished off on both of Swan's goals. Shew netted his first of the year to round out the scoring, with an assist from Jeremy Jackson (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame North).

Truman followed up with another shutout, this time 4-0 over host UMSL. Again it was Byers and Swan doing the net damage. Byers opened the scoring thirteen minutes in with the help of the first Bulldog assist for transfer Charlie McDaniel (Olathe, Kan./Olathe North). Swan answered his teammate with his third tally of the season late in the first period, with the helper coming from Jackson. Byers added another pair of goals late in the second, the first on a penalty kick and the second with an assist from Coppage.

The Bulldogs revolving goalkeeper system was a success in the first two games, as David Wiebenga (Raytown, Mo./Raytown South) and TJ Dube (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) each played a half in both contests. Dube made seven stops against the Norse and picked up the win, while Wiebenga stopped three shots in relief. Neither faced a shot on goal against UMSL.
