Bulldog Student-Athletes Honored at Athletics Awards Night
The Truman State University Athletics Awards Night was held on Tuesday evening, April 30.
Several teams and individuals were honored at the event, including the Bulldog women's swimming team, which repeated as national champion in 2002. Dave Boster, manager of the Quincy, Ill., Sears store, presented the women's swim team with the Sears Directors' Cup Waterford crystal national championship trophy, along with a check for $1,000 for the University. Additionally, Randy Smith, Faculty Senate President, presented the team with a resolution from the Faculty Senate.
A pair of students with perfect 4.0 GPAs captured the second annual Dean's Recognition of Academic Excellence Award, given by Dr. Lou Ann Gilchrist, Dean of Student Affairs. The women's recipient was senior outside hitter Jenny Glenn (Granby, Colo./Middle Park) of the volleyball team. Glenn, an exercise science/pre-education major was a first-team Verizon Academic All-America selection in 2001 and helped the volleyball squad to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. The men's winner was senior defensive back Lance Dorsey (Hannibal, Mo.) of the Bulldog football squad. Dorsey, a biology/pre-medicine major was also a first-team Verizon Academic All-America choice in 2001 and he finished fourth on the 8-3 Truman team with 52 tackles.
Dorsey was also the male recipient of the Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete Award. The women's honor was given to Megan Williams (Columbia, Mo./Hickman), an All-America and conference champion hurdler on the Bulldog track & field team.
The Women's Team Academic Award for 2001-02 went to the cross country team, which has a 3.55 GPA for the year. The men's award was given to the the soccer and cross country teams, which maintained GPAs of 3.24 and 3.23, respectively.
Former Truman sports information director Bill Cable was given the third annual Spirit of Truman award, which was renamed the William H. Cable Spirit of Truman Award in his honor. Cable served as the University's first sports information director for 37 years before retiring in 1995. He's a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame and the Truman State University Athletics Hall of Fame.
