Truman Student-Athletes Dominate MIAA Presidential Scholar And Academic All-MIAA Lists

Truman student-athletes accounted for 26 percent (33) of the 128 members of the Academic All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association list that was released earlier this week. Academic all-MIAA honors are earned by student-athletes which maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.5 and who earned all-MIAA recognition as members of their respective teams.

In addition, out of 10 MIAA institutions, Truman also placed the most members on the MIAA Presidential Scholar list which honors squadmembers which have maintained a 4.0 cumulative GPA. Of the 36 MIAA presidential scholars named, Truman student-athletes made up 28 percent (10) of those individuals.

The next closest schools, Central Missouri and Southwest Baptist, each had five individuals named as MIAA presidential scholars. Emporia State (Kan.) and Central Missouri each placed 18 on the Academic all-MIAA list to tie for second behind Truman.

Four Bulldogs earned a place on both the Academic All-MIAA and MIAA Presidential Scholar lists after excelling in their sports, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

Sophomore Jenny Glenn (Granby, Colo./Middle Park) was an honorable mention all-MIAA hitter, finishing third on the team in kills (2.69 p/g) as the volleyball team finished the 1999 campaign with a 23-9 overall record, and posted a school-best 14-2 MIAA record en route to a second-place finish in the league.

Junior Heather Mackie (Wildwood, Mo./ Lafayette) was an honorable mention all-MIAA second baseman for the Bulldog softball team. She finished the season with a .308 batting average as Truman repeated as the South Central region runnerup, posting a record of 44-12, and won the MIAA title with a 16-3 record. Mackie was also a second-team GTE Academic All-America, after earning first-team GTE Academic All-District accolades.

Freshman Mike Nelson (St. Louis/Northwest House Springs) earned academic all-MIAA status in both indoor and outdoor track. He was a member of the third-place two-mile relay squad indoors, and finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run (4:01.84) outdoors.

Senior Jason Reinberg (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) was named the Ken B. Jones MIAA Student-Athlete of the Year this past month and earned honorable mention all-MIAA honors this past season. Reinberg, a 6-5 forward for the Bulldog men's basketball team, was a two-time GTE first-team academic all-America. This past season, he averaged a conference-best 8.9 rebounds per game to go with 12.7 points an outing. He ended his career as the only player in Truman history to currently rank in the school's top five for points, rebounds, assists and free throws.
