Soccer Teams Prepare for 2002 Seasons

The 2002-03 academic year is approaching fast and the Truman soccer teams are getting ready to report to camp and begin preparations for their upcoming seasons. The men's and women's soccer teams will report on Aug. 10 to begin preseason drills. The teams will train twice a day until school begins on Aug. 26.

Picture day will be Aug. 18 and is open to the public.

The women begin their season on the road at top regional foes the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, followed by a trip south to Fargo for a game with North Dakota State the next day. The Bulldogs then return home for the Truman Classic on the weekend of Sept. 7-8.

The women return seven starters, including all-America back Jennifer Buscher and Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association freshman of the year and scoring leader, Sara Murray. However, they will need a replacement for all-America goalkeeper Emily Huyck. The Bulldogs will be looking to repeat last season's success when they captured their third-straight MIAA crown and hosted the NCAA Division II first- and second-round playoff games.

The Truman men's team will open at home on Aug. 21 vs. Southern Indiana at noon. The 'Dogs will be looking to rebuild in 2002 after losing nine starters off of last season's 11-5-2 team. Without a single senior on the squad and the loss of all-time Truman scoring leader Matt Byers, they'll be looking to a large contingent of newcomers for help in returning to postseason action this year.

Preseason Football Camp Gets Underway Aug. 11

The Bulldog football team is scheduled to report to camp on Aug. 11 to begin preseason workouts for the upcoming 2002 season. The 'Dogs will train for approximately three weeks, before beginning their season on Sept. 7 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

They will don full pads for the first time on Thursday, Aug. 15. Picture day will be Aug. 18 from 8-10 a.m. at Stokes Stadium and is open to the public, while later that day at 3 p.m., the Bulldogs will have their first intrasquad scrimmage. Their final preseason scrimmage will take place on Friday, Aug. 23, at 7:15 p.m.

Two-a-day practices will take place from Aug. 12-17 and Aug. 19-23 from 8:45 to 11:45 am and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The 'Dogs' regular season practice time will be from 3:30 to 5:45 Tuesday through Friday, beginning Aug. 27.

Truman welcomes back seven starters on defense and six starters on offense, including all-America receiver Andrew Blakley who is sure to complete his career as the Bulldogs' all-time receiving leader.

Also back in the mix are second-team all-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association seniors Derek Kent, in the defensive backfield, and linebacker Jake Willrich, along with Alfonso Pugh, the team's all-purpose yards leader last year, and preseason all-America kicker, Austin Lepper.

The Bulldogs completed the 2001 season with an 8-3 record and were 6-3 in MIAA play, finishing in a tie for third.

On Monday, the MIAA coaches preseason poll will be released.

Preseason Volleyball Camp Begins Aug. 10

The Bulldog VOLLEYBALL team is scheduled to report to the University on Aug. 9 and will begin practice on Aug. 10. The team will be in camp for nearly three weeks before beginning its season on Aug. 30 vs. Regis (Colo.) at the Nebraska-Omaha Tournament. Through the first week of the preseason, the 'Dogs will have two practice sessions per day. On Aug. 18, the team will have its picture day from 10-11 a.m.

PRACTICES WILL BE HELD daily at various times. The first session will be held on Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and will be followed by a 3-5 p.m. session. From Aug. 12 through Aug. 16, practice will be held in 9-11 a.m. and 2:30-5 p.m. sessions. During Truman Week, Aug. 19-23, the team plans three-hour practice sessions, usually from 2-5 p.m.

The 'Dogs' regular season practice time will be from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on non-game days Monday through Friday.

THREE STARTERS RETURN for Truman, including two all-region performers, senior setter Monica Marlowe and outside hitter/libero Shelby Ortwerth. Marlowe is poised to end her career as the team record holder for assists average. Also back is sophomore Jessica Sears, who captured MIAA and South Central Region freshman of the year accolades in 2001.

IN 2001, the 'Dogs posted a school record 37-2 mark and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the first time in history. The team also used a perfect 16-0 ledger in the MIAA to win its first outright league title.

On Monday, the MIAA coaches preseason poll will be released. The AVCA has yet to release a preseason top 25.
