Redding and McKay Chosen to Represent Truman at NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference

Two Truman athletes have been chosen from a pool of 1,084 nominations to represent the University at the fifth annual NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference.

Junior running back Mike Redding (Lake Zurich, Ill.) and freshman Sophie McKay (Montreal, Quebec/Antoine De St. Exupery), a member of the women's swimming team, were the two representatives chosen from Truman. Jenny Glenn (Granby, Colo./Middle Park), a junior on the volleyball team, will serve as an alternate to the conference.

A total of 300 student-athletes were chosen from NCAA institutions that participate in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. The conference will be held May 28 through June 1, 2001, at the Disney's Wide World of Sports and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The mission of the NCAA Foundation leadership Conference is to provide a diverse group of the nations top student-athletes an opportunity to actively participate in challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enable them to become better leaders on their campuses and in their communities. As a result of participation, student-athletes will enhance their communication, decision-making, problem-solving, critical-thinking and collaborative skills. the conference also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities.

The 2001 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference will focus on topics identified during the nomination process as well as topics recommended by members of the Divisions I, II and II NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committees who serve as an association-wide voice for student-athlete issues. Topics from past conferences have included developing leadership skills, changing perceptions, developing political skills and utilizing the student-athlete committee.

Over 1,300 student-athletes have taken part in the NCAA Foundation Leadership experience. The student-athletes chosen to participate will represent all NCAA divisions, 22 different sports and more than 20 countries.
