Truman Basketball Teams Begin Official Practices; Swim Team Opens 1999-2000 Season with Purple & White Intrasquad Meet
Men's Basketball: Friday marks the first day winter sports can begin organized practices, according to NCAA regulations.
The men's basketball team will take the floor for the first time, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Pershing Arena. The Bulldogs return five starters and seven letterwinners from the 1998-99 squad that finished with a 26-7 record and advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four. Preseason all-America forwards Cory Parker (Guthrie Center, Iowa) and Jason Reinberg (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia), both seniors, lead the Truman contingent. Parker averaged 17.5 points and 7.7 rebounds in '98-99, while Reinberg averaged 15.7 points and 8.4 rebounds.
Women's Basketball: The Truman women's basketball team will begin practicing at 6:30 Friday in Pershing Arena. They also return a number of players from the 1998-99 team that advanced to the finals of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championship.
Junior forward Kelli Krueser (Bettendorf, Iowa/Davenport North), a first-team all-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association choice a year ago and preseason all-America candidate this year, is the top returner for the women. Sophomore center/forward Jennifer Perkins (Fort Dodge, Iowa/St. Edmund) and junior guard Wendi Sobaski (Packwood, Iowa/Pekin) were honorable mention all-MIAA picks last year and will also return for the Bulldogs. The women finished the 1998-99 campaign with a 22-9 record, the best season in school history, and were 10-6 in the MIAA.
Swimming: The Truman men's and women's swimming teams will open the 1999-2000 season with an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday, starting at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs return several all-Americas among both the men and women, including national champion Bryna Busch (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East). Busch won the 100-yard freestyle at the 1999 NCAA Division II Women's Swimming and Diving Championships and led the Truman women's team to a third-place national finish. The men's team placed ninth in the nation last year.
