Softball Completes Season as Three-Time Regional Runner-Up; Bredbenner Earns Second All-America Honor
The Truman softball team (43-11-1 and 13-4 in the MIAA) completed its season on May 12 after losing the North Central region title game to the eventual national champion, the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks.
It was the third-straight season the Bulldogs finished as the regional runnerup, but their first as a member of the North Central region. The 'Dogs competed in the South Central region prior to moving to the North Central this season.
The Bulldogs tallied the third-most wins in school history, just behind the 46 wins of 1999 and last season's 44 victories.
In the 2001 North Central Region tournament, Truman fell to the host and 2000 defending national champion, North Dakota State, in the first game, 5-2. However, the 'Dogs came back in the double-elimination tournament, knocking Missouri Southern out after scoring six runs in the 10th inning to win, 8-2.
The Bulldogs began the 10th-frame onslaught when freshman shortstop Elizabeth Economon (Affton, Mo./Notre Dame) banged out a double with one out. Freshman right fielder Stephanie Cepicky (St. Louis/ Lindbergh) drove Economon in with a single for what turned out to be the game-winning run. Senior all-America catcher Kristi Bredbenner (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) was intentionally walked, before the Lady Lions brought their ace to the mound. But senior second baseman Heather Mackie (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) hit a double to score Cepicky, senior first baseman Leann Paul (Olathe, Kan./Olathe North) walked and junior pitcher Jennifer Hulsopple (Peculiar, Mo./Raymore-Peculiar) cracked a three-RBI double before the MSSC starting pitcher was brought back into the game.
The Bulldogs then flied out to left field before junior left fielder Angela Ligouri (Clive, Iowa/Dowling) reached on an error by the MSSC shortstop, advancing Hulsopple to third. Freshman center fielder Katy Mueller (Affton, Mo./Cor Jesu), who began the inning with a pop up to the shortstop, was back at the plate and singled to score Hulsopple for the 'Dogs' eighth run. Ligouri was caught stealing to end the inning, leaving a big job for Missouri Southern in the bottom of the 10th. Though MSSC gave it a stab with a one-out double, followed by a single, the Lady Lions ran out of steam and grounded out on their last two at bats.
It was the first victory over the Lady Lions in five games as MSSC took the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association regular season and tournament titles, beating Truman 4-0 and 2-0 in the regular season and by a pair of 2-1 scores in the MIAA tournament.
It was NDSU's turn next in the semi-final game of the regional tournament. The Bulldogs had lost to the regional host twice already (including a 2-0 defeat at the Nebraska-Omaha tournament on March 31), but the third time was the charm as Truman knocked out the Bison, 2-1.
The 'Dogs, aided by a couple of errors, scored first in the sixth inning, but NDSU led off the bottom of the frame with a pair of doubles, scoring a run on the second extra-base hit. Mueller, Economon and Bredbenner all mustered hits in the seventh, while Bredbenner's turned out to be the game-winner as Mueller raced to the plate, beating the throw to score.
In the championship game against Nebraska-Omaha, the Bulldogs drew first blood when Paul hit a lead-off double and later scored on an error by the pitcher. However, the Mavs answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, and added two insurance runs in the third to advance to the DII World Series.
North Central Region All-Tournament team selections for Truman included Hulsopple, Bredbenner, Mackie, Economon and Mueller.
All-America and All-Region Selections: Bredbenner, Hulsopple and Economon all earned first-team all-North Central region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Their first-team selections made them eligible for all-America selection. However, only Bredbenner was named to the NFCA all-America contingent. She was a third-team pick this year after earning first-team all-America status a year ago.
All-MIAA: For the second-consecutive season two Bulldogs earned first-team all-MIAA honors from the conference coaches. Both Bredbenner and Hulsopple repeated as first-team all-MIAA choices.
Bredbenner hit for a .387 average for the year, while Hulsopple led the 'Dogs on the mound with a 23-7 record and 0.96 ERA. Also a DH, Hulsopple banged out a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat Washburn 6-3 in game two of the MIAA tournament.
Economon, who led the squad with a .389 batting average for the season, was named the MIAA's freshman of the year.
Cepicky rounds out Truman's .300 hitters with an average of .306, and was Truman's only second-team all-MIAA pick.
