Softball Team Off to Second-Best Start in School History
The Truman State University softball wrapped up its spring break trip yesterday with a pair of wins over Findlay (Ohio) 5-0 and Ferris State (Mich), 8-7.
In the first game, The Bulldogs scored one run in the first, fourth and fifth innings, and racked up two scores in the second to come away with the win over findlay.
Sophomore pitcher Britni Buford (Kahoka, Mo./Clark County) got the win to push her record to 3-0 on the young season. she allowed just one hit and struck out three batters.
Freshman Shortstop Elizabeth Economon (Affton, Mo./Notre Dame) was 3-for-3 against Findlay with a double and a walk. For the week, Economon had six doubles and a triple, as well as one stolen base.
Senior all-America catcher Kristi Bredbenner (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) also had a double against Findlay, along with two RBIs.
In the game with Ferris State, the Bulldogs narrowly escaped with the win after scoring two runs, with two outs, in the bottom of the seventh inning. Truman was also down 7-0 in the second inning, but managed two runs in the bottom of the second, followed by one in the fifth and three in the sixth, before scoring the two in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Junior Jennifer Hulsopple (Peculiar, Mo./Raymore Peculiar) got the win and was 4-0 on the mound for the Truman for the week. She allowed just two runs on five hits, and struck out three.
Economon went 3-for-5 in the game with a triple and five RBIs. Freshman center fielder Katy Mueller (Affton, Mo./Cor Jesu) also had a triple, while senior second baseman Heather Mackie (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) had a double.
Freshman outfielder Stephanie Cepicky (St. Louis/Lindbergh) had one stolen base as a pinch runner. Bredbenner also had two hits and two RBIs vs. Ferris.
Freshman pitcher Breanna Wonderly (Conception, Mo./Jefferson C 123) tallied her first collegiate win on the mound against Dowling (Ohio) on Monday.
Freshman first baseman Leann Paul (Olathe, Kan./Olathe North) scored her first home run on the college level and the 'Dogs first of the year when she hit the game-winning round-tripper that scored both of the 'Dogs' runs in a 2-1 victory over Indiana (Pa.) on Monday.
Truman got off to an 8-0 start last year, but rattled off 10 straight wins in 1999 to start the season, the best start in school history.
