Bulldog Women in the lead after day 1 at NCAA Division II Swimming Championships

The Truman State University women's swim team is leading the way after the opening day of the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships in Canton, Ohio.

The Bulldog women, who have 13 individuals competing at the national meet, have amassed 156 points to lead second-place Drury (Mo.) by 11. University of California-San Diego is third with 70.5 points.

Finals on Day 1 included the 1000-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relay.

In the women's 1000-yard free, the Bulldogs crowned their first national champion of the meet as senior Jess Martin (Buckingham, Iowa/Cedar Falls) captured first place with a time of 9:55.86. In fact, the 'Dogs had three of the top four finishers in that race, with freshman Katie May (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) taking second in 10:12.36, while junior Bridget Riley (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) placed fourth (10:21.56).

Also in women's action, sophomore Kelli Dudley (Topeka, Kan./Topeka West) and senior Bryna Busch (Leawood, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) each had runner-up finishes in the 200 individual medley and 50-yard free. Dudley finished the 200 IM in 2:04.78, while Busch completed the 50 free in 23.67 seconds. Also in the 50 free, sophomore Sara Hatcher (Kingdom City, Mo./North Callaway) finished third (23.78) and senior Andrea Newton (Clive, Iowa) was 10th (24.53). In the 200 IM, sophomore Liz Hug (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville) got sixth with a time of 2:06.55.

The women's 200-yard medley relay squad also placed second. The team of Dudley, sophomore Meghan Osborn (Tipton, Iowa), Hug and Hatcher finished in 1:46.74.

On the men's side, Truman currently stands 18th overall. In the only Wednesday final involving a Truman athlete, freshman Robby Cooper (Holden, Mo.) finished 12th in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:40.87.

The Division II Swimming & Diving Championships continue through Saturday.
