Truman Men and Women Dominate at South Dakota Meets
The men's and women's swimming teams travelled to Vermillion, S.D., over the weekend for two competitions. On Friday, they competed in the South Dakota Invitational against South Dakota, South Dakota State, and the Nebraska Omaha women. On Saturday, both teams competed against South Dakota in a dual meet.
The Truman men won the invitational with 122 points, followed by South Dakota with 95, and South Dakota State with 22. The Bulldogs won the 200 medley (1:49.21) and the 200 freestyle (1:37.61) relays by a convincing margins. Junior Kyle Sterup (Fremont, Neb.) continued his dominance in the distance freestyle events winning both the 800 (8:41.52) and 400 (4:10.25) meters.
Sophomore Matt Pray (Naperville, Ill./ North) won the 100 meter butterfly in a time of 57:82, resetting an 8-year-old pool record. Other winners included sophomore Drew Yemm (Overland Park, Kan./ Blue Valley NW) in the 50 meter freestyle (24.47), senior Dan Lopez (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit) in the 200 meter IM (2:16.08) and Eric McCullough (Leewood, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) in the 100 meter freestyle (54.88).
The men's team also won Saturday's dual meet, 129-92, taking 10 of 11 events. Highlights included the distance freestylers, going 1-2-3 in the 1500 and 200 meter events. In the 1500, Sterup won (16:40.60), followed by Robby Cooper (Holden, Mo.) (16:56.05) and Bryan Meyer (Tonganoxie, Kan.) (17:21.37). In the 200, Pray won (2:01.02), followed by Andy Ladrow (Colorado Springs, Colo./Mitchell) (2:01.17) and McCullough (2:01.72).
The women also dominated their competitions over the weekend. On Friday, the Bulldogs won the invitational with 137 points, followed by Nebraska-Omaha with 56, South Dakota with 29 and South Dakota State with eight, as the 'Dogs won every event. A host of pool records were set, and freshman Katie May (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) swam an NCAA automatic time (1:06.25) in the 100 meter backstroke.
At the Saturday dual meet with South Dakota, the Truman women were champions 153-64, also winning every event. They finished 1-2-3 in the 1500-meter freestyle with junior Bridget Riley (Overland Park, Kan./Olathe South) the champion (17:99.66). The Bulldogs also went 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle, led by May (2:11.44), and placed 1-2-3 in the 400-meter IM led by sophomore Amanda Shearer (Bartlesville, Okla.) (5:13.43). The 200-meter butterfly was led by May (2:31.90).
The 'Dogs also placed 1-2-3 in the 400 meter freestyle as Liz Hug (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville) won the event (4:34:99). The 200-meter breaststroke was led by Christie Williamsen (Downer's Grove, Ill./North) (2:53:63).
The next meet for the Bulldogs will be against Division I Southwest Missouri State University. Truman will then travel to Springfield, Mo., on Saturday, Jan. 27. On Feb. 3, the' Dogs will host Drury for a showdown between No. 1 ranked Truman and the No. 3 ranked Panther women.
