Against Drury, Women's Swimming Wins 126-79 While Men Lose 99-104
The Bulldog men's and women's swim teams faced off against in-state rival Drury on friday night. The Truman women outswam Drury 126-79 to prove why they are the top Division II swimming program in the nation. The Bulldog men lost narrowly by a score of 99-104 in their best showing against a Drury team. A total of seven Pershing Natatorium records fell during a fast night of Division II swimming.
On the women's side, senior Liz Hug (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville) won the 200 IM in a pool record time of 2:05.88. Hug is the national record holder in the event.
Also breaking a pool record was senior Kelli Dudley (Topeka, Kan./West). She swam a 2:05.01 in the 200 backstroke to win the event.
The Bulldog women's 400 freestyle relay team of Liz Hug, Sara Hatcher (Kingdom City, Mo./North Callaway), Diana Betsworth (East Moline, Ill./United Township), and Sarah Dance (Lincoln, Neb./Southeast) also broke a pool record with their winning time of 3:30.64.
Also breaking a pool record was Drury's Cindy Ong. She swam a 2:06.61 in the 200 butterfly to win the event.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs started off the evening with a win in the 400 medley relay. The team of Brian Teson (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X), Andy Harken (Liberty, Mo./Liberty), Matt Pray (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North), and Josh Otis (Johnston, Iowa/Downling) swam a 3:28.17, a new pool record by three seconds.
Drury's Henrik Weible answered with a dominating performance in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:19.13, shattering the old pool record by over seventeen seconds.
In the next event, Robby Cooper (Holden, Mo./Holden) touched out an opponent to win the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.28.
The 200 butterfly was also a close race. Drury's Alexis Perdomo swam a pool record time of 1:52.74 to touch out Matt Pray who turned in an automatic national qualifying time of 1:52.91.
In the 200 backstroke, the Bulldogs took the top two spots. Brian Meyer (Tonganoxie, Kan./Tonganoxie) won the event with a time of 1:58.42 while Brian Teson came in second with a 1:58.65. Teson also won the 200 IM in a time of 1:56.51.
Tomorrow the Bulldogs head to Iowa City to face the Division I University
of Iowa at 1 p.m.
