Murphy Announces More Freshmen Swimmers for 2003-04
Head swimming coach Colleen Murphy recently announced seven freshman swimmers who will compete with the 2003-04 team. The group of swimmers include four women and three men.
Women:
Brittany Anderson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) joins the Bulldogs as an all-state breaststroker and USA Swimming sectional qualifier. She took sixth place in the 100 breaststroke and 11th in the 200 breaststroke at the 2003 sectional meet. She is also the teammate of Lija Kaleps-Clark who signed in the fall.
Kathleen Moyer (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) is a three-time Michigan state champion in the 200 freestyle and an all-state selection in the 100 freestyle. She also won all-America consideration honors in both the 100 and 200 freestyle events. With her club team, Birmingham YMCA, she recently competed at the YMCA Nationals in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events.
Krista Wray (Monroe, Ohio/Lemon-Monroe) specializes in freestyle, IM, and butterfly. She was all-state this year in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Wray recently competed with her club team, Countryside YMCA, at the YMCA Nationals in the 200 butterfly, 400 IM and the 200, 500 and 1,000 freestyle events. She is also the cousin of current Bulldog swimmer Katie May.
Brigit Brunsman (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) was the 2001 state champion in the 100 breaststroke. In the same event, she was a three-time all-state selection. Brunsman is an all-America in both academics and swimming and was MVP of her high school team.
Coach Murphy noted about the recent signees, "This is a great group of swimmers who fit very well with our team. All of them have done excellent work in the classroom as well as the pool and characterize what we are looking for in a student-athlete. We are excited for their arrival next fall as they will have an important role on our team next year."
Men:
Chris Hagan (Boone, Iowa/Boone) specializes in freestyle and butterfly and joins the Bulldogs as a multiple-time all-state swimmer, taking fourth in the 200 freestyle and seventh in the 100 freestyle at this year's state meet. Hagan is also an Iowa Senior Academic Swimming Award winner and competes with the Ames Cyclones.
Tom Applegate (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac Township) joins the Bulldogs as a freestyler. He qualified for the Illinois state meet in the 50 freestyle and took third at sectionals in the same event.
Denis Potts (Rodgersville, Mo./Glendale) earned all-state honors in the 50 and 100 freestyle, finishing sixth and 11th respectively. He was also a member of two of Glendale's all-state relay teams.
"These guys will come in and contribute right away on our team," Murphy said. "Being from smaller towns, they are excited to compete in a large team atmosphere. We are anticipating great things from these men, and it will be exciting to see them develop."
