Women's Swimming Competes with Iowa, Loses 138-136; Men Lose 169-95

In Iowa City Saturday night, the Truman women's swim team outswam the Division I University of Iowa. However, because the Hawkeyes chose to score diving, the Bulldogs lost 136-138. The Bulldog men stayed competitive in a few events, falling to the Hawkeyes 169-95.

For the women, the 200 medley relay started off the meet with a win. The team of Krista Pray (Naperville, Ill./North), Michaela Osborn (Tipton, Iowa/Tipton), Christina Blose (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North), and Sara Hatcher (Kingdom City, Mo./North Callaway) swam a 1:48.59 to beat the Hawkeye's relay. The Bulldogs' B relay was touched out by Iowa for the second-place spot.

Freshman Meredith Rocha (Whitehouse, Texas/Grace Community) won two individual events on the evening. She swam a 2:08.47 in the 200 butterfly and a 58.46 in the 100 butterfly.

Michaela Osborn won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:05.79. She also swam a 2:24.72 in the 200 breaststroke and was touched out for first by Iowa's Kristin Eide who swam a 2:24.58.

Sara Hatcher also won an individual event on the evening. Her time of 24.28 was good enough for first in the 50 freestyle. Teammate Whitney Jensen (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell) came in second with a 24.70.

The Bulldog women finished a fast day of swimming by winning the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Hatcher, Jensen, Diana Betsworth (East Moline, Ill./United Township), and Sarah Dance (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southeast) swam a 1:36.05, their best time of the season.

On the men's side, the Bulldogs were dominated by the Hawkeyes in nearly every event, but tried to stay competitive.

Matt Pray (Naperville, Ill./North) won the only event for the Bulldog men. He swam a 50.74 in the 100 butterfly to take first. Pray also placed third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:54.80.

Andy Harken (Liberty, Mo./Liberty) placed second in two events, swimming a 59.18 in the 100 breaststroke and a 2:10.48 in the 200 breaststroke.

Brian Teson (Kansas City, Mo./St. Pius X) placed second in the 100 backstroke with his time of 52.77. He also placed third in the 200 backstroke with a 1:58.50.

This was the last dual meet for the Bulldogs in the 2002-03 season. Catch them next as they head to Springfield, Mo. for the Central States Championships, their conference meet, on Feb. 12-15.
