Women's Swimming Wins Delta State Invitational; Men's Team Finishes Second

The Truman swim teams went into the Christmas break on a high note as both teams had great meets at the Delta State Invitational on Dec. 17-19.

The women's squad dominated the field, winning 11 events and collecting 918 points, 295.5 more than the runner-up team from Cal State Bakersfield. The men's squad took home two first-place awards and had many runner-up finishes as they recorded 713 points, trailing just the host school which won the event with 742 points.

Several records were set by the Bulldogs at the meet. Michaela Osborn broke her own school record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.15. Josh Otis also broke a school record in the 200 IM, winning the race in a time of 1:53.59.

The women's team also broke or tied six Delta State natatorium records in the 400 medley relay (Lija Kaleps-Clark, Osborn, Meredith Rocha and Aimee Gregor), Kaleps-Clark in the 200 backstroke and 200 IM, Katie Funk in the 1000 free and 1650 free and Osborn in the 100 breaststroke.

Both Bulldogs squads also earned many national qualifying times at the event.

For the women's team, qualifiers were: Funk in the 500 free, 1650 free and 800 free relay, Kathleen Moyer in the 500 free and 800 free relay, Sue Ellen Thoma in the 200 free relay and 800 free relay, Emily Chadwick in the 200 backstroke, Christina Blose in the 100 fly, 200 medley relay and 200 free relay, Gregor in the 400 medley relay, Krista Pray in the 200 medley relay, Sarah Dance in the 100 free, 200 free, 400 IM, 200 free relay, 400 free relay and 800 free relay, Lindsay Vaughan in the 200 breaststroke and Kaleps-Clark in the 100 backstroke.

On the men's squad, the new qualifiers were: Josh Otis in the 200 IM and 400 medley relay, Brian Teson in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay, Andy Harken in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay, Chris Brammer in the 400 medley relay, Robert Fletcher in the 200 medley relay and Vince Struble in the 200 medley relay.

The Truman women's team has now qualified 16 athletes for the national competition, while the men's team has qualified six on the season, with two more relays just tenths off a qualifying time.
