Truman Men's and Women's Swimming Record Outstanding Performances at Purple and White Meet

The Truman State women's swim team kicked off their 2004-05 season this past weekend with an intrasquad meet that produced some strong swims.

The 400 medley relay team of sophomore Lija Kaleps-Clark, seniors Michaela Osborn, and Christina Blose, and freshman Emily Pufall swam an impressive 3:55.98, which would be an automatic qualifying national standard during the season.

Kaleps-Clark also had outstanding performances in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.47 and the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.20, which was a personal record. Both of these times would also be automatic qualifiers during the regular season. Osborn, who placed third at nationals in the 200 breaststroke in 2004, narrowly missed the automatic standard qualifying time with a 2:24.75.

Other outstanding swims came from senior Diana Betsworth. She won both the 100 free (52.31) and the 200 free (1:52.24), which would both be A-cuts. Sophomore Lindsay McReynolds picked up where she left off last season winning the 1,000 free (10:35.96) the 500 free (5:13.12) and the 200 fly (2:10.01). McReynolds will be the top distance swimmer for the Bulldogs this season.

To end the night the 400 free relay team of Betsworth, junior Whitney Jensen, senior Sarah Dance, and junior Katie Funk clocked a time of 3:37.43 to clinch first place.

On the men's side there were also some outstanding relay performances as well as some strong individual swims. to begin the night the 400 medley relay team of sophomore Robert Fletcher, freshman Kyle Ruiz, junior Chris Brammer, and senior Ashtyn Beek recorded a winning time of 3:37.51.

Fletcher also went on to capture first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.98. Freshman standout Alex Totura captured two firsts in the 200 and 500 free respectively. he also was a key member of the second place 400 free relay.

Another strong freshman, Ryan Ferrell also had strong swims in the 100 free (49.75) and the 200 free (1:48.58). Seniors Nick Joslin and Beek also had great swims on the night. Joslin in the 50 free with a time of 22.9 and Beek in the 100 with a 48.94 claiming second and first respectively.

Freshman sprinter Tim Scheuber recorded the fastest 50 free of the night with a 22.53. The last race of the night proved to be an exciting match up with just a tenth of a second separating first and second place. The team of Ferrell, Scheuber, senior Phil Brown, and Otis recorded a time of 3:15.20 narrowly touching out second place that put up a time of 3:15.34.
