Three Bulldog Swimmers Earn Verizon Academic All-District Honors

Three members of Truman State University's NCAA Division II champion women's swimming team were named today to the Verizon Academic All-District VII At-Large first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Senior Bridget Riley (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) and juniors Kelli Dudley (Topeka, Kan./Topeka West) and Liz Hug (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville) will each advance on to the Verizon Academic All-America At-Large ballot after earning first team all-district honors.

Riley holds a 3.81 GPA as a biology major and this year was tied as the fourth-highest individual point scorer at the NCAA Division II Championships. A three-time College Swim Coaches Association of America academic all-America, Riley this year was part of the national champion 800-yard freestyle relay team that set a new Division II record. She also placed second at the national meet this year in the 500-, 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyles and was sixth in the 200-yard free. She was an all-America all four years of her college career, and, earlier this month, she was named Kansas City Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year.

Dudley, who maintains a 3.89 GPA in exercise science, is a two-time CSCAA academic all-America. At this year's national meet, she was part of the national champion and Division II record-setting 400-yard medley relay team and was the third-highest point scorer at the NCAA meet. A three-year all-America, she also placed second in the 200- and 400-yard individual medley events and was third in the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes. Last year, Dudley was a second-team Verizon Academic all-district at-large selection.

Hug carries a 3.81 GPA in nursing and this year was the second-highest point scorer at the national championships, ranking only behind freshman teammate and Division II Women's Swimmer of the Meet, Diana Betsworth. Hug posted individual NCAA crowns this year in the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle, while also serving on three national champion and Division II record-setting relay teams. Her time in the 200-yard IM also set a new Division II record. She's a three-year all-America and a two-time CSCAA academic all-America selection.

The Truman women's swimming team is coming off of its second straight national championship and has placed among the top four in the nation for five consecutive years.
