Men's and Women's Swimming Teams Fall to Florida State
The men's and women's swimming teams ended their Florida training trip with a visit to Florida State University in Tallahassee on Saturday. Though both teams lost to the Seminoles, they performed well, as well as adding swims to their national team rosters.
The women's team took Florida State down to the last relay where a win would have secured the meet for the Bulldogs. Though losing the relay by one second, the 'Dogs bettered their qualifying time by two seconds with the team of Jess Martin, Katie May, Sara Hatcher, and Bryna Busch.
Many Truman swimmers bettered their times, but the swim of the meet was Alison Blythe's 200 butterfly. Blythe bettered her time by over seven seconds, achieving the A-cut in a time of 2:06.07. That performance also beat the team record by approximately three seconds.
Martin also swam strong, bettering her team record in the 1000 freestyle by two seconds in a time of 10:16.41. Martin is the top ranked swimmer in that event in the nation. Busch earned a win in the 200 freestyle in a season best time of 1:53.31, while May finished third bettering her time to a 1:56.72. Andrea Newton added the 200 freestyle to her national events with a fifth place finishing time of 1:57.48, swimming under the B-Cut. Kelli Dudley also swam a season best time in the 200 IM in 2:08.51, winning the event. Dudley also won the 200 backstroke in a season best time of 2:05.67, winning the event. Newton finished second in a time 2:07.63 with May finishing fourth with a time of 2:08.47. All three women swam faster than the A-cut, with May achieving the cut for the first time. The women went 1-2 in the 500 freestyle with Martin leading the way in a 5:05.27 and Riley following in a time of 5:09.68.
The men also swam well in their loss to the Seminoles, adding a few more national swims to their roster. Truman men dominated Florida State in the distance events, finishing 1-2 in the 1000 freestyle. Kyle Sterup swam the 1000 in a winning time of 9:49.72, followed by Robby Cooper in a time of 9:57.19, both achieving their first B-cuts in the event. The distance duo also went 1-2 in the 500 freestyle in times of 4:44.94 and 4:50.32 respectively. Sterup's time of 4:44.94 gives him the B-cut in the 500 freestyle to go along with the 1000 freestyle. Matt Pray also went a season best time in the 200 butterfly (1:54.44), finishing third.
Next, the swimming teams will host Missouri and Northern Iowa before traveling to Vermillion, S.D., on Jan. 19 to compete against South Dakota State and University of Nebraska-Omaha.
