McKinney Receives Leadership and Sportsmanship Award
Truman State University senior tennis player Jessica McKinney (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) has been named the North Central Region's recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.
McKinney posted a 24-2 record and was Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association runner-up at No. 5 singles in 2001-02. She also was part of the fourth-place MIAA No. 1 doubles team with freshman Melissa Dudak.
For her career, McKinney finished with a 95-23 won-lost record in singles and was 67-41 in doubles. She was a four-time all-conference performer and a three-time honoree on the MIAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. She maintained a 3.31 GPA in business administration (marketing)/Spanish.
As a team, Truman finished with a 16-3 record, including 6-0 in MIAA play. The 'Dogs went on to place third in the conference tournament. Truman also made its seventh NCAA postseason appearance in the last eight years, falling in a first-round match earlier this month to Northwest Missouri State at the North Central Regional.
The ITA/Arthur Ashe Award goes to an individual who has displayed outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as notable scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
