Track Teams Open Outdoor Season At The Augustana Open

The outdoor track season opened up last Saturday for the Bulldog track squads and the two teams combined to bring home 19 first-place titles at the Augustana Early Spring Opener in Rock Island, Ill. Both squads finished second at the meet, coming in behind the host school who easily won both team titles due to a much larger squads than the other schools in the meet.

Christina Winkler (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) had the best afternoon, setting two NCAA provisional marks in the 200m and 100m hurdles. She won the 200m title in a time of 24.62 and captured first in the 100m hurdles with a mark of 14.18, a new track and meet record.

Other individual runners to win events were Rachel Williams (Kirksville, Mo./Kirksville), Candice Hoskins (Grandview, Mo./Grandview), Jacquie Faust (St. Louis/Cor Jesu Academy), Lindee Weese (Kansas City, Mo./Oak Park) and Lauren White (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit). Williams won the 100m sprint with a mark of 13.17. Hoskins won the 400m race in a time of 1:03.76. Faust won the longest distance event at the meet, the 3,000m, with a time of 11:31.2. Weese was champion of the 400m hurdles after finishing the race in 1:08.10. White captured the 2,000m steeplechase in a time of 7:20.45.

In the field events, Danielle Grimes (Birmingham, Ala./Jefferson City) won the discus event and was first in an exhibition hammer competition. She recorded a throw of 129-11 in the discus and a throw of 147-1 in the hammer. Bridgette Carpenter (Tebbetts, Mo./Jefferson City) won the shot put competition with a mark of 40-3.25. Lainie Bohnsack (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Central) won high jump first-place honors after clearing 5-4.25.

The final women's first-place title came from the 4x100 relay team, which won in a time of 51.03. Members of that team were Winkler, Williams, Candi Jones (Oskaloosa, Iowa/Oskaloosa) and Sara Jessen (Brookfield, Mo./Brookfield).

On the men's side, both Eli Klimek (Platte City, Mo./Platte County) and Richard Mayson (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) won a pair of competitions. Klimek won the 1,500m race in a time of 4:11.33 and won the 3,000m run in a time of 9:12.4. Mayson was first in the 110m hurdles after recording a time of 15.35 and he also won the triple jump competition with a mark of 42-10.25.

Josh Mayson (Mexico, Mo./Mexico) completed a Bulldog sweep of the 100m race after he won the men's competition in a time of 11.05. Truman also won both 400m hurdles titles as Blake Oelze (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt South) was first on the men's side with a time of 59.54. James Walton (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale South) won the long jump competition after recording a mark of 22-0.25.

The Bulldogs track teams will host the Truman Open next weekend at Gardner Track in Kirksville. The first events at the annual meet will begin at 10:30 a.m.
