Both Bulldog Track Teams Find Success At Iowa State Open

The Bulldog track teams won two events and set some high marks last weekend when they competed against a very good field at the Iowa State Open in Ames.

Junior Christina Winkler (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) and senior Alan Heincker (Dittmer, Mo./Grandview) both won events at the meet, which included several Division I schools. Winkler won the 400m race, setting a NCAA provisional mark with a time of 56.72. Heincker defeated 48 other runners while winning the 5,000m event, completing it in a time of 14:49.52.

On the women's side, two other NCAA provisional marks were met at the competition and one other provisional time was improved. Senior Sara Jessen (Brookfield, Mo./Brookfield) finished third behind Winkler in the 400m with a provisional time of 57.14. The 4x400 relay team finished fourth overall with a time of 3:50.23. That relay team consisted of Winkler, junior Candice Hoskins (Grandview, Mo./Grandview), Jessen and senior Candi Jones (Oskaloosa, Iowa/Oskaloosa).

Winkler set a season-best mark in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.80 seconds, on her way to finishing fifth in the event. Jessen just missed a NCAA provisional mark in the 60m hurdles, running a 9.02, just 0.02 seconds off the provisional time.

Other top 10 performances on the men's side came from sophomores Walter Washington (St. Louis/Webster Groves) and Dan Zwilling (St. Louis/St. Mary's). Washington, who was returning from an injury, came in ninth in the 400m with a time of 49.69, less than a second off the NCAA provisional mark. Zwilling crossed the finish line in 10th place in the 800m, completing the race in season-best time of 1:56.07.

Both teams will compete in Warrensburg, Mo. next weekend at the Mule Relays.
