Indoor Track Runner Christina Winkler Advances to Nationals

The final entry list for the 2004 NCAA DIvision II Indoor Championships was released today and Truman's Christina Winkler (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) will be the lone particiapant representing the Bulldogs.

The junior had times high enough to qualify for two events, the 60m hurdles and 400m. In the hurdles, she will enter the national meet with the third-best time of 8.68. In the 400m, she recorded the 16th-best time in Division II this year with a mark of 56.53.

Last weekend, Winkler earned high point honors at the MIAA Championships after scoring 28.5 points. She won the 60m hurdles titles, was runner-up in the 200m and 400m and she ran a leg on the MIAA champion 4x400 relay team. She broke school records in the 60m hurdles and 200m and set meet records in the hurdles and as part of the relay team.

Winkler is looking to add to her career total of four all-American awards. She has already won two outdoor all-American honors in the 400m hurdles and two more as part of the outdoor 4x400 relay team. The school record for most all-American awards by a track and/or cross country woman is six, set by Kerry Knepper from 1987-1990.

The women's track team, which finished third at last week's conference championship, had reached seven other NCAA provisional marks, but only Winkler's was high enough to qualify for nationals. The men's team, which was seventh at the conference meet, had two NCAA provisional marks, but neither was high enough to advance to nationals.

The NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held on Mar. 12-13 in Boston, Mass.
