Both Track And Field Teams Take Second In Outdoor Season Opener
The Truman State University men's and women's track and field teams each took second place on Saturday at the Augustana College Early Spring Opener in Rock Island, Ill. The men's team scored a total of 225 points as Augustana won the meet with 341. On the women's side Truman totalled 291.5 points while Augustana finished with 339 points for the top spot.
The women's team won 12 of the meet's 18 events and was led by senior Molly Kandlbinder (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia), who took first-place honors in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes and was also part of the first-place winning 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams. In both the 100 and 200, the Bulldogs placed four in the top five, including a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-meter dash. Senior Lauren Dorsey (Hannibal, Mo./Northwest Missouri St.) won both the 400-meter hurdles and the javelin and junior Natasha Carter (Chicago/South Shore) was first in the discus and shot put. Senior Dafros Mudyirwa (Westview Kadoma, Zimbabwe/Jameson) was the winner in the long jump and took part in the 4x100-meter relay team. Sophomore Jamille Curry (Chicago/Morgan Park) won the 400-meter dash and was a runner on the 4x400-meter squad.
The men's team was led by junior Danny McDonald (Hermann, Mo.), who won the 200 and 400-meter dashes and was also part of of the first-place 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay squads. McDonald's time of 48.07 in the 400-meter dash was a provisional mark for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships. Other multiple winners for the Bulldogs were sophomore Dave Mayhew (Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) who took first in the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles while also serving on the winning 4x100-meter relay squad. Senior Chad Froelker (Owensville, Mo.) won the long jump and was on the 4x400-meter relay squad and sophomore Andy Doering (Florissant, Mo./McCluer North) was the winner in the 1500-meter run and served as part of the first-place 4x800-meter relay team. In the 1,500-meter run, the Bulldogs placed four runners in the top five.
The Truman teams will return to action on Saturday (March 25), hosting their lone home meet of the season, the Truman Open.
