Track & Field Teams Place Third at Augustana
Both the Truman men's and women's track and field teams placed third on Saturday at the Augustana Early Spring Opener in Rock Island, Ill. The meet marked the first outdoor competition of the season for both Bulldog squads.
The men's team finished with 143 points at the meet to place third out of 12 schools. On the women's side, the Bulldogs tallied 94 points and placed third out of 10 teams.
Junior Dave Mayhew (Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) placed first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.30 seconds. That mark would be an NCAA Division II provisional qualification, however it was a wind-aided time and there was no wind gauge used.
In addition to Mayhew's first-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, freshman Brian Dzingai (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. George's) brought home first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.72 seconds. Alfonso Pugh (Galesburg, Ill.) was first in the long jump with a leap of 22'-6.75". Senior Dan McDonald (Hermann, Mo.) placed first in the 400-meter dash (49.67 seconds) and sophomore Brian McQueary (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary's) earned the top spot in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:03.10).
First-place finishes for the women's team included sophomore Jill Lowry (Jefferson City, Mo.) in the 100-meter dash (12.71) and 200-meter dash (25.99), junior Jamille Curry (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) in the 400-meter dash (1:01.86) and the 4x800-meter relay team of Amy Johnson, Brandy Leffler, Sonya Yamnitz and Jody Shanks, which finished in 10:14.70.
Senior Kristi Morton (Mexico, Mo.) pole vaulted 10'-11.75" for second place. However, the pole vault was held indoors, so the mark cannot be used as a provisional qualification.
The Bulldog track & field teams will be back in action this Saturday when they host their lone meet of the year, the Truman Open.
