Bulldog Track Teams Participate at Iowa State Open
Both Truman State University indoor track and field teams competed on Friday and Saturday at the Iowa State Open in Ames, Iowa.
The Bulldog women's team came home with two more NCAA Division II provisional qualifiers. Sophomore Jennifer Tesmer (Harrisonville, Mo.) finished seventh in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:06.24 to provisionally qualify. Junior Megan Williams (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) finished ninth in the 60-meter hurdles and provisionally qualified with a time of 8.93 seconds. Tesmer and Williams join senior Kristi Morton (Mexico, Mo.) and junior Karena Singleton (Glenwood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) as Truman's provisional qualifiers. Morton has already reached the mark in the pole vault and Singleton has provisionalled in the triple jump.
The Bulldog women had several other stellar performances in this weekend's meet. Freshman Candi Jones (Oskaloosa, Iowa) brought home first place in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:25.69. Junior Kasye Hahn (St. Louis, Mo./Horton Watkins) finished sixthin the 400-meter dash in 58.49 seconds. Freshman Sonya Yamnitz (Hallsville, Mo./Helias) was a ninth-place finisher in the 1,000-meter run, with a clocking of 3:07.91.
On the men's side, freshman Brian Dzingai (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. George's) had the Bulldogs' highest finish of the day when he placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.67 seconds. Dzingai was also 12th in the 60-meter dash (6.98 seconds).
Juniors Matt Helbig (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) and Andy Doering (Florissant, Mo./McCluer North) had 12th-place finishes in the mile and 3,000-meter run, respectively. Helbig completed the mile in 4:23.36, while Doering finished the 3,000 in 8:44.78.
Both teams will return to action this weekend. The men will be in Indianapolis on Saturday for the Butler University/Smith-Barney Invitational, while the women will participate on Friday at the Central Missouri State University Invitational in Warrensburg, Mo.
