Men's Track & Field Fifth at MIAA Championships
True freshman Brian Dzingai (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. George's) broke two conference records and helped the Truman State University men's track & field squad to a fifth-place finish this weekend at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Outdoor Championships in Joplin, Mo. Truman scored 77 points to place 2.5 points behind fourth-place Northwest Missouri and 22 ahead of sixth-place Missouri Southern. Central Missouri State won the meet with 196 points.
Dzingai won by more than a half-second in the preliminary round of the 100-meter dash when he turned in a time of 10.19 seconds, good enough for a new MIAA record. The old mark of 10.42 seconds was set in 1985 by David Jackson of then MIAA competitor Southeast Missouri State. Dzingai's time also broke his own school record set earlier this year of 10.52 seconds. Dzingai went on to win the 100-meter dash final with a time of 10.35 seconds, while sophomore Alfonso Pugh (Galesburg, Ill.) finished fourth in 10.73 seconds.
Dzingai didn't stop there. In the 200-meter dash, he broke an even older MIAA record when he finished in 20.50 seconds. That clocking broke the 18-year-old conference mark of 20.87 seconds set by Southeast Missouri's Tim Williams in 1983. Dzingai also etched his name in the Bulldog record book, beating Fred Banks' 1967 school record of 20.90 seconds.
Dzingai's time in the 200 meters was also the first-place time by six-tenths of a second.
Both of Dzingai's times in the 100 and 200 are NCAA Division II Automatic Qualifying marks.
Truman had several other athletes earn NCAA Division II provisional marks, including junior Dave Mayhew (Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels), who placed second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.55 seconds.
Pugh earned a provisional in the 100-meter dash preliminaries when he finished in 10.68 seconds. Pugh was also part of the 4x100-meter relay team that earned a provisional mark with a third-place time of 41.21 seconds. Other members of that team included junior Nolan White (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge), senior Danny McDoanld (Hermann, Mo.) and Dzingai.
Sophomore Matt Helbig (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) collected a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:55.93.
While the 4x100-meter team was third, other fourth-place finishes on the weekend went to McDonald in the 400-meter dash, junior Ben Rosario (St. Louis, Mo./SLUH) in the 5,000-meter run and the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Jake Kingery (Monroe, Iowa/Prairie City-Monroe), senior Vasean Nixon (Peculiar, Mo./Raymore-Peculiar), White and McDonald.
Kingery had also collected a second-place finish a week ago in the decathlon with an NCAA Automatic mark of 7,033 points.
Truman will compete this Saturday (May 12) at the Billy Hays Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
