Three Records Fall for Truman Women's Track & Field Team
The Truman State University women's track & field team broke three school records over the weekend while competing in the Drake Relays and University of Missouri-Kansas City Invitational.
In Saturday's action at the Drake Relays, Truman broke the school record in the 4x400-meter relay as juniors Kasye Hahn (St. Louis/Horton Watkins) and Jamille Curry (Chicago/Morgan Park) and freshmen Sara Jessen (Brookfield, Mo.) and Candi Jones (Oskaloosa, Iowa) turned in a third-place clocking of 3:46.51 in the College Women's 4x400-meter relay final. The old mark of 3:47.28 was set last year by Molly Kandlbinder, Lauren Dorsey, Hahn and Curry at the NCAA Division II Championships. Hahn, Curry, Jessen and Jones had also beat the old record with a time of 3:46.86 in the preliminary round.
Two more marks fell on Saturday, including the 1600-meter sprint medley relay. The Bulldog squad of sophomore Jill Lowry (Jefferson City, Mo.), Hahn, Jones and senior Jody Shanks (Liberty, Mo.) finished third in the College division of the event, with a time of 4:04.04. The previous school record was 4:06.44, set in 1988 by Darenda Ruble, Suzy Chase, Saundra Hester and Kerry Knepper.
Two Bulldogs not competing at Drake were juniors Megan Williams (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) and Karena Singleton (Glenwood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor). They, instead, took part in the University of Missouri-Kansas City Invitational. Singleton placed first in the triple jump with a school record leap of 39'-3", a mark that beat her own Truman standard of 39'-2.25" set last year.
Williams was also first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.57 and placed 11th in the 200-meter dash (26.54).
In Thursday's action from the Drake Relays, junior Beth Luebbering (St. Thomas, Mo./Helias) placed 13th in the Invitational Women's 10,000-meter run finals with a time of 37:48.42.
On Friday at Drake, senior Kristi Morton (Mexico, Mo.) finished 20th in the pole vault by clearing 11'-4.5".
This Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6, the 'Dogs will be back on the track in full force, competing at the MIAA Championships at Missouri Southern State College in Joplin. Truman is the defending conference champion in outdoor track & field.
