Truman Women's Track & Field Results From MIAA Championships

The Truman finished second at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships this past weekend, despite being the defending MIAA champion. The Bulldogs were edged out by six points by Emporia State which won the meet with 38 points. Two women broke MIAA records at the meet, while 11 brought home all-conference recognition by finishing among the top six in their events. In addition, senior Kristi Morton (Mexico, Mo.), junior Megan Williams (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) and freshman Candi Jones (Oskaloosa, Iowa) were MIAA champions in the pole vault, 55-meter hurdles and 600-yard dash, respectively.

Morton set a new league indoor record in the pole vault with a height of 11'08.00", improving on the record of 11'04.25" she set at the meet last year. It was also the best mark set by an individual in Central Missouri's Multi-Purpose Building. It also marked her third conference pole vault title in indoor and outdoor track and field combined.

Williams set a new MIAA mark in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.11 seconds and also broke the 1983 Truman record of 8.13 seconds set by Myrna Moore. The old MIAA mark was set in 1989 by Lizz Barringer of Southeast Missouri State University. It marked the third career hurdles title for Williams in both indoor and outdoor combined.

Both Williams' and Morton's record-setting performances improved on the two women's provisional qualifying marks.

Jones' winning time in the 600 marked the second-fastest time in the event ever run at the MIAA indoor meet.

Also provisionally qualifying for the NCAA meet were freshman Jackie McDuffey (Pineville, Mo./McDonald County), with a third-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles (8.38), junior Kasye Hahn (St. Louis, Mo./Horton Watkins), with a second-place finish in the prelims of the 400-meter dash (57.92), and Jamille Curry (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) who came in third in the finals of the 400-meter dash. Hahn went on to finish second in the finals of the 400-meter dash (58.14).
