Women's Track & Field Team Wins Northwest Invitational
The Truman State University women's track & field team won by 1.5 points on Saturday over Nebraska-Omaha at the Northwest Missouri State Invitational. The 'Dogs were champions in five events at the meet, and came home with four new NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks.
In the field events, two Bulldogs brought home first-place finishes, including junior Karena Singleton (Glenwood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor), who won the triple jump with a leap of 38'-8.05". That mark is good enough for an NCAA Division II provisional, pending a wind-gauge reading from the event.
Senior Kristi Morton (Mexico, Mo.) posted Truman's other win in the field events. She cleared 10'-10" in the to win the pole vault.
On the track, freshman Candi Jones (Oskaloosa, Iowa) brought home a provisional mark in the 400-meter dash as she placed first with a time of 56.63 seconds. Jones led a group of three Bulldogs in the top seven in that event.
Jones also anchored the 4x400-meter relay team that broke meet and stadium records with a first-place time of 3:49.44 seconds. Juniors Kasye Hahn (St. Louis/Horton Watkins) and Jamille Curry (Chicago/Morgan Park) along with freshman Sara Jessen (Brookfield, Mo.) comprised that team, which provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships.
Junior Megan Williams (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) won for the second time in as many outdoor meets this year in the 100-meter hurdles. Williams finished in 14.43 seconds, as Truman placed three runners in the top eight.
Jessen, already a provisional qualifier with the 4x400-meter relay team, also earned a provisional qualifying mark with a second-place time of 1:02.90 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Truman finished the meet with 154 points to edge second-place Nebraska-Omaha's 152.5. University of North Dakota was third with 137 points.
The 'Dogs will be back in action this Friday and Saturday at Emporia State University's Division II Challenge.
