Bulldog Men's Track & Field Squad Readies for MIAA Indoor Championships
The Truman State University men's track & field team will be in Joplin, Mo. this Friday and Saturday for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association indoor track & field championships. The Bulldogs have seven consecutive top-five conference indoor finishes, but haven't placed above fourth since 1992.
The 'Dogs head into the conference meet after competing on Friday (Feb. 15) at the University of Northern Iowa Dome Open in Cedar Falls. Several Truman athletes turned in their season-best performances on the weekend, including sophomore Brian Dzingai (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. George's), who placed second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 60-meter dash. Dzingai's time of 21.67 seconds in the 200 was his best of the indoor season and was just 0.13 seconds off of his school record pace set last year.
True freshman Andy Person (Wildwood, Mo./Ladue) collected another second-place finish for the Truman men, running a season-best time of 8:51.63 in the 3,000 meters. Person was one of three Bulldogs to finish in the top five in that event, as sophomore Brad Peter (Arnold's Park, Iowa/Okoboji) finished third in a season-best 8:52.81. Junior Brian McQueary (St. Louis/St. Mary's) was fifth in 8:54.72, also his season-best 3,000-meter time.
Senior Dave Mayhew (Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) turned in a season- and career-best time of 8.14 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, a new provisional mark. Last week Mayhew ran a time of 8.15 seconds at the Mule Relays, but, while competing unattached, Mayhew did not wear a Truman uniform and thus his time could not be considered for an NCAA provisional.
In the 400 meters, freshman Walter Washington (St. Louis/Webster Groves) finished sixth in 50.01 seconds, his season best.
