Women's Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at Augustana

The Truman State University women's track & field team won 13 of the 20 events and collected a second-place finsh on Saturday at the Augustana (Ill.) Early Spring Opener in Rock Island, Ill.

The Bulldogs won every running event in the meet, which marked the start of the outdoor track & field campaign.

Junior Jill Lowry (Jefferson City, Mo.) and senior Beth Luebbering (St. Thomas, Mo./Helias) each won two individual events. Lowry captured top honors in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, while Luebbering won the 1,500- and 3,000-meter events.

Senior Megan Williams (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) finished the 100-meter high hurdles in a meet record time of 14.68 seconds, a figure that was just three one-hundredths of a second off an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying pace. Sophomore Sara Jessen (Brookfield, Mo.) collected a first-place showing in the other hurdling event, the 400-meter variety.

In the 400-meter dash, senior Kasye Hahn (St. Louis/Ladue) collected another Bulldog victory and led three Truman finishers in the top four of that event. Freshman Candice Hoskins (Grandview, Mo.) came home first in the 800-meter run.

Junior Suzanne Schmidt (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn) collected top honors in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, leading a Truman 1-2-3 finish.

Senior Karena Singleton (Glenwood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) posted the Bulldogs only victory in a field event as she won the triple jump in 37'-2.25".

Truman also won each of the three relay events, and set meet records in the 4x100 and 4x400.

Next on the schedule for the women is their lone home meet of the season. The Bulldogs host the Truman Open on Saturday (March 30) at the Kenneth L. Gardner Track. The meet begins at 10:30 a.m.

AT THE VERNON KENNEDY HEPTATHLON in Warrensburg, Mo., Truman freshman Christina Winkler (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) won three of the seven events and captured first place with 4,310 points. She won the 200-meter dash (26.59), 800-meter run (2:19.70) and 100-meter high hurdles (15.65) to outdistance second-place by 125 points.

In all, the Bulldogs collected three of the top eight spots. Sophomore Jackie McDuffey (Pineville, Mo./McDonald County) was third with 4,042 points and freshman Karla Jordan (Liberty, Mo.) was eighth with 3,759.
