Women's Track & Field Set for MIAA Championships
The Truman State University women's track & field team competed in two meets this weekend and has athletes involved in another today as the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Outoor Championships approach.
The Truman women competed in two individual events and two relays at the 93rd Drake Relays, held Thursday-Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa. On Saturday, the Bulldogs also sent some athletes to the University of Missouri-Kansas City Invitational.
Today, the first event of the MIAA Outdoor Championships, the MIAA Heptathlon, wraps up in Joplin, Mo. Entering today's action, freshman Christina Winkler (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) stood in third place with 2,727 points. Sophomore Jackie McDuffey (Pineville, Mo./McDonald County) was sixth and freshman Karla Jordan (Liberty, Mo.) was eighth. Winkler, just 178 points out of the lead, won two of the four events, the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash, on Sunday.
At the Drake Relays on Thursday, junior Suzanne Schmidt (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn) placed 16th in the steeplechase with a time of 11:33.65. Friday's action saw senior Megan Williams (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) finish sixth in her heat with a time of 14.70 seconds against some of the top women's hurdlers in the region.
Also on Friday, Truman won its heat in the college division 4x400-meter relay preliminary with a time of 3:49.90. The team, made up of seniors Kasye Hahn (St. Louis/Ladue) and Jamille Curry (Chicago/Morgan Park), along with Winkler and sophomore Candi Jones (Oskaloosa, Iowa) knocked just under a second off of their previous Division II provisional time. On Saturday, the team beat its preliminary time by more than two seconds and placed second in the final of the event with a clocking of 3:47.23.
Hahn and Jones made up half of the women's sprint medley team, which also included junior Jill Lowry (Jefferson City, Mo.) and senior Emily Komiskey (Galena, Ill./Dubuque Wahlert). The squad finished fifth with a time of 4:05.92.
Other members of the Bulldog team competed on Saturday at the Missouri-Kansas City Invitational. Highlights from that meet included senior Beth Luebbering (St. Thomas, Mo./Helias) placing third in the 1,500-meter run and sophomore Sonya Yamnitz (Hallsville, Mo./Helias) earning a second-place showing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Senior Karena Singleton (Glenwood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) added a third-place finish in the triple jump.
UP NEXT: The Bulldog women head west to Emporia, Kan., for the 21st annual MIAA Outdoor Championships. The meet will be held on Saturday and Sunday (May 4-5) .
