Women's Track & Field Team Places Second at MIAA Championships
The Truman State University women's track & field team collected six first-place finishes en route to its third consecutive top-two finish at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Outdoor Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
The Bulldogs scored 141 points in the meet, a tally that was bested only by host Emporia State (Kan.), which ended with 161. The 'Dogs were three points ahead of third place Pittsburg State (Kan.). Central Missouri State came in fourth with 104 points.
The first of Truman's 2002 MIAA crowns was won by the women's 4x100-meter relay team of seniors Megan Williams (Columbia, Mo./Hickman), Kasye Hahn (St. Louis/Ladue) and Jamille Curry (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) along with junior Jill Lowry (Jefferson City, Mo.), which finished in 47.79 seconds. It marks the Bulldogs' fifth consecutive outdoor league championship in the event.
Williams won her third consecutive outdoor conference title in the 100-meter hurdles as she turned in a season-best time of 14.06 seconds, a figure that improves NCAA Division II provisional qualifying status. Williams entered the meet with the fourth-ranked time (14.12 seconds) in Division II this season. In all, the championship marks Williams' sixth straight, counting her three indoor championships in the 55- or 60-meter hurdles.
True freshman Christina Winkler (High Ridge, Mo./Northwest) finished second in the 100-meter hurdles, 0.68 seconds behind Williams, and grabbed a conference title in the 400-meter variety with her time of 1:01.82, a figure that was 1.3 seconds ahead of second place. Winkler, also the MIAA runner-up in the heptathlon last week, actually had a faster time in the preliminary round of the 400 hurdles (1:01.51), a clocking which improves Winkler's previous provisional qualifying mark.
Hahn won her second career outdoor championship in the 400-meter dash as she finished in 56.57 seconds and led a 1-2-3 Bulldog finish at the line. Curry brought home second, followed by sophomore Candi Jones (Oskaloosa, Iowa) in third. For Hahn it capped a sweep of the 400 in 2002, as she also collected the indoor MIAA crown in the event.
Lowry earned her second straight outdoor 100-meter dash conference title as she finished in 12.06 seconds. She also led a Truman foursome that placed in four of the top six spots in the 200. Lowry was second in 24.70 seconds, followed by Curry in third, Hahn in fourth and Williams in sixth. For Lowry, her 200-meter clocking was an improvement on her already established provisional time, but the time can't be used because the wind reading was above the allowable amount.
The Bulldogs' final title of 2002 came in the 4x400-meter relay where Hahn, Winkler, Curry and Jones finished in 3:50.45, more than three seconds ahead of second place. Truman has now won three of the last four outdoor crowns in the 4x4, including two straight.
Senior Karena Singleton (Glenwood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor), who logged a fourth-place showing in the 100-meter dash, brought home third place in the triple jump with a leap of 39'-1". That mark improved her previous NCAA provisional standard and gave her four consecutive all-conference accolades in the triple jump.
Senior Beth Luebbering (St. Thomas, Mo./Helias) became a four-time all-MIAA honoree in the 3,000- and 10,000-meter runs.
Other highlights from the meet included a third-place finish by junior Suzanne Schmidt (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and a fourth-place showing by senior Emily Komiskey (Galena, Ill./Dubuque Wahlert) in the 800. Junior Jennifer Tesmer (Harrisonville, Mo.) earned her third straight all-MIAA honor in the 5,000 meters.
Up next for the Truman women is a return trip to Emporia, Kan. for the Emporia State Twilight Qualifier on Saturday (May 11). After that, its off to the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships, May 23-25 in San Angelo, Texas.
